Ewell Lands MVFC Newcomer of the Week After NDSU Victory

11.25.2024

ST. LOUIS, Mo. — After a successful Senior Day inside the DakotaDome and knocking off No. 1-ranked North Dakota State, the Missouri Valley Football Conference (MVFC) announced the final set of weekly awards which saw Nate Ewell earn Newcomer of the Week.

Ewell (Sr., Waterloo, Iowa) picked up his second double-digit tackle game of the season with 10 tackles, that sat tied for the game-high. The senior also posted a pass break-up in the game. He also recorded the final tackle of the game that was for a loss but also secured the first victory over NDSU at home since 2002.

He also was part of the Coyote defensive unit that held the Bison to their second-lowest rushing yard total of the season against FCS teams, holding NDSU to just 166 yards on the ground. The defense forced five NDSU punts on the day, including four-straight to start the game and the decisive one in the fourth quarter to get the ball back to the offense with just over a minute left on the clock.

The win over the Bison also secured the Coyotes earn a share of the 2024 MVFC title, a first in program history.

The Grand View (Iowa) transfer started all 11 games in the regular season for the Yotes at linebacker. He sits second on the team in tackles with 59 and had four tackles for loss and a sack. Also on the season, he was credited with five quarterback hurries off the edge and three pass break-ups.

The Coyotes will have this weekend off after earning the No. 4-seed in the FCS Playoffs and will return to action in the DakotaDome on December 7 against the winner of Tarleton State (Texas) and Drake.

Ewell is the second Coyote this season to earn Newcomer of the Week from the Valley, joining Quaron Adams (Murray State game) in the feat. Overall, he's the fifth Yote to pick up a weekly honor from the conference office.
