Paul Bruns reaches 1,000 career points, Coyotes fall to Omaha

OMAHA, Neb. – South Dakota fell to Omaha 91-84 Thursday night inside Baxter Arena.

South Dakota (10-16, 3-8 Summit) was led by 22 points from Bostyn Holt and 20 points from Lahat Thioune. Holt shot 61.5 percent from the field and Thioune shot 69.2 percent from the floor. Kaleb Stewart added 18 points on 70 percent shooting and Paul Bruns rounded out the double-figure scoring with 14 points and four three pointers. Bruns' first three-pointer of the game put him above the 1,000 career point threshold and he is now the 33rd Coyote to join the 1,000 point club.

Omaha (13-14, 6-6 Summit) was led by Frankie Fidler who scored a game-high 23 points. All five Maverick starters reached double-digits and all seven Mavericks who checked in to the game scored. JJ White had a big second half for Omaha, scoring 16 of his 18 points in the second frame, including the game-icing three pointer.

It was a back-and-forth battle from the beginning as South Dakota looked to split the season series against Omaha. Both teams came out hot to start the game, shooting over 60 percent from the field for a majority of the first half. The Mavericks used an 11-0 run midway through the first half to extend the lead to double-digits for the first time. Omaha took a 47-38 lead into the halftime break.

Thioune started the second half strong, laying in seven quick points to cut into Omaha's lead. The two sides traded the lead back-and-forth for a majority of the second half until the Coyotes fell into a cold spell on offense. Omaha took advantage and used a 13-2 run to extend the lead back out to double-digit range in the final minutes.

South Dakota shot 56.1 percent from the field and 50 percent from three. Omaha outrebounded the Coyotes 31-27 and scored 44 points in the paint. The Mavericks forced 14 Coyote turnovers and scored 25 points off those.

The Coyotes travel to face St. Thomas on Saturday in Schoenecker Arena in St. Paul. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. and the game will be streamed on the Summit League Network available via the Midco Sports Plus app.
