ST. PAUL, Minn. – South Dakota fell to St. Thomas 83-80 Saturday night inside Schoenecker Arena.
Â
South Dakota (10-17, 3-9 Summit) was led by
Bostyn Holt who scored 23 points and tallied this third-straight 20+ point scoring game. Holt shot 64 percent from the field and knocked down both of his three-point attempts. The Coyotes shot a blistering 78 percent from three in the first half, knocking down 11 of their 14 attempts in the opening frame. Four of the five Coyote starters ended the game in double-figure scoring.
Â
St. Thomas (17-10, 7-5 Summit) also had four of five starters score in double figures and was led by Raheem Anthony. Anthony scored 20 points on 50 percent shooting from the field and went 7-of-9 at the free throw line, including six straight free throws in the final minutes of the game to help St. Thomas defeat the Coyotes for the first time.
Â
South Dakota came out swinging in hopes of getting the season sweep and staying undefeated against St. Thomas, knocking down 11 first half threes and shooting 78 percent from three and 65 percent from the field. St. Thomas didn't seem to have an answer for the blistering Coyote offense that led by as many at 14 in the first frame and South Dakota took a 10-point lead into halftime.
Â
The Tommies regrouped at the break and started the second half on a 14-4 run to tie the game and completely shift the momentum. It was back and forth from there all the way to the final buzzer as St. Thomas avenged the one-point overtime loss it suffered earlier this season in Vermillion.
Â
Kaleb Stewart scored 16 points to tally his eighth double-figure scoring performance in the last nine games.
Lahat Thioune and
Max Burchill each added 10 points with Thioune grabbing seven rebounds and Burchill knocking down both of his three-point attempts. The Coyotes shot 56.9 percent from the field and 61.1 percent from three for the game.
Â
South Dakota returns home for a three-game homestand that includes Kansas City (Feb. 22), Oral Roberts (Feb. 24), and North Dakota State (Feb. 29). The Coyotes travel to North Dakota on March 2 to wrap up the regular season.
