Coyotes fall to Kansas City

VERMILLION, S.D. – South Dakota fell to Kansas City 82-78 Thursday night in Vermillion.

Kaleb Stewart had 25 points for South Dakota (10-18, 3-10 Summit) and went 11-13 at the free throw line after drawing eight fouls. Isaac Bruns had a big second half for the Yotes, scoring all 13 of his points in the second frame on 5-of-7 shooting from the field. Bruns had a few consecutive big plays in the final few minutes to help the Coyotes cut into a double-digit deficit.

Kansas City (13-15, 7-6 Summit) was led by leading scorer Jamar Brown with a game-high 27 points. Brown went 10-of-11 at the free throw line and shot 43 percent from the field. Khristion Courseault tallied a double-double with 10 assists and 22 points on 50 percent shooting and three triples.

The Roos were hot from behind the arc in the opening frame, knocking down nine three pointers on 47 percent shooting. They built up a double-digit lead that they carried through a majority of the contest and led by as many as 17 with just under 10 minutes to play in the second half. Bruns provided the spark off the bench with multiple three-point plays to help the Yotes cut the deficit to single digits in the final few minutes. In familiar fashion, Jevon Hill knocked down a big three to make it a four-point game at 75-79 with 30 seconds to play. The Coyotes had three looks to try and make it a one-point game but couldn't get the shots to fall.

Lahat Thioune recorded his 11th double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds. Bostyn Holt rounded out the double-digit scorers for South Dakota with 10 points and five boards. The Yotes outrebounded Kansas City 34-28 but committed 20 turnovers.

South Dakota stays home to host Oral Roberts on Saturday at 1 p.m. in the annual Black History Month game.
