VERMILLION, S.D. — South Dakota basketball picked up its sixth win in the Sanford Coyote Sports Center Wednesday night 80-71 over Dakota State.
Isaac Bruns led the Yotes in scoring with 23 points, his sixth straight game with 20+, on 5-of-10 shooting and went 12-of-16 from the free throw line.
Cameron Fens notched his second straight double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds.
Jordan Crawford added 15 points, five rebounds and three steals, while
Shey Eberwein chipped in 11 points off the bench.
Behind a 53.1 shooting percentage in the first half, the Trojans held a 39-33 lead at the intermission. Dakota State scored 32 of its 39 points in the paint and held USD to 10-of-25 (40.0%) in the opening 20 minutes. The Coyotes, who ranks top-10 in the NCAA in free throw attempts and makes, shot an uncharacteristic 12-of-24 from the charity stripe in the first half. Bruns paced the Yotes with 11 points, but the Trojans' Nathan Ojukwu poured in 18 points in the first.
The Yotes came out of the halftime break in a flurry with a 12-2 run, capped by a Crawford triple, to regain the lead, 45-41. While South Dakota held the lead for the majority of the second half, the Trojans stayed within striking distance and briefly tied the contest at 61-61 with 7:48 remaining. South Dakota would score the next six points to take back control and start a 12-2 run to extend its lead to double-digits after a steal and slam by Crawford and a triple from Eberwein.
South Dakota shot 16-for-28 (57.1%) in the second half and was 11-for-15 from the line to secure the 80-71 win over DSU. Three Coyotes in Crawford (12), Bruns (12) and Fens (10) scored in double-figures in the second half and shot a combined 64.7%.
South Dakota will hit the road for their next contest on Saturday in Manhattan, Kansas against Kansas State at 11 a.m.
