Yotes tally 15 runs in pair of wins over Mississippi Valley State and UTSA

HAMMOND, La. — The South Dakota softball team scored 15 runs at North Oak Park Friday on its way to a pair of wins over Mississippi Valley State and UTSA. The Coyotes have now won four in a row and will return to action tomorrow morning for a rematch with UTSA to start the day.

Game 1 vs Mississippi Valley State – W, 8-0 (5 innings)
The Yotes wasted little time in the first game of the day as they loaded the bases with the first three batters reaching base safely. Back-to-back sacrifice flies from Delaney White and Brooke Carey scored Ella McGee and Tatum Villotta to give the Yotes a 2-0 advantage with two outs. After Madison Evans reached on a throwing error, Sara Iburg extended the Coyote lead with a double to left field to score Evans and Alyssa Thorson.

McKenna Young struck out the side in the top of the second, and the Coyote bats went right back to work. Three straight singles loaded the bases again in the bottom of the second. White came through again for the Yotes, plating two runs with a double down the left field line. Carey and Evans brought home a run with back-to-back singles and the Yotes led 8-0 after two.

Young tallied two strikeouts in the third and put away all three outs in the fourth via punchout. She would end her day with 4.0 innings pitched, one walk, no hits and 10 strikeouts.

Campbell German entered in relief for the final inning and allowed just one hit while striking out one to close out the 8-0 five-inning win.

Rylie Jones, Alyssa Thorson and Villotta notched multiple hits, while Villotta and Evans both scored a pair of runs.

Game 2 vs UTSA – W, 7-1
Clara Edwards tossed her second straight complete game as she led the Yotes to a 7-1 win over UTSA in game two. Edwards allowed just five hits, one run and struck out two.

Villotta and White continued their red-hot day at the plate as they both went 3-for-3 against the Roadrunners with a pair of RBIs.

White brought in the first run of the contest with a double to left field the brought up leadoff hitter McGee. The Coyotes tacked on a pair of runs in the bottom of the second courtesy of McGee, who drove in Jones and would touch home plate herself after a Villotta single to give USD a 3-0 early lead.

After two straight scoreless innings, the Roadrunners put across their lone run on Edwards in the top of the fifth. The Yotes answered in the bottom half of the frame with a run when Edwards squared around for a SAC bunt, and was safe at first, that scored Iburg from third.

Edwards worked out of a jam with runners on second and third in the top of the sixth, recording back-to-back outs to end the inning unscathed.

The Yotes added three insurance runs in the sixth from the trio of Villotta, White and Edwards, while Edwards made quick work in the seventh by retiring the side in order with two strikeouts to close out the 7-1 win.

The Coyotes open tomorrow's set of games with a rematch against UTSA starting at 11:00 a.m. and will face host team Southeastern Louisiana at 3:30 p.m.
