IOWA CITY, Iowa -- One three-peat was accomplished while another came up short on Thursday during day two of the Summit League Championships at CWRC on the University of Iowa campus.
The Coyote women secured their three-peat in the 200 free relay, leading from start to finish, in clocking a 1:31.43. The team of
Emily Kahn,
Christina Spomer,
Sara Mayer and
Carson White won the school's fifth league title in a relay, all coming in the last three seasons.
Kahn, meanwhile, was upended in her bid to win three straight 50 freestyle crowns when Omaha senior Payton Easley edged the Coyotes senior by :0.05 seconds at the wall. Easley was timed in 22.79 while Kahn had a season best 22.84.Â
Thursday's first night of individual finals saw three races unfold with the 500 free, 200 IM and 50 free.Â
The Coyotes had a pair of individuals earn All-Summit League honors along with both the men's and women's 200 free relay. While the women's team saw 12 individuals earn points over those three races and the men's team had five individuals earn points.
Emily DiProspero, a freshman, joined the older Emily in earning All-Summit League honors with a runner-up finish in the 500 free. Her 4:52.17 clocking moved her up to second all-time.
Camilla Brogger-Andersen, a junior, whom DiProspero passed on the Coyote Top Ten chart, was 10th in a season best 4:58.28 while freshman
Ashley Koenig placed 12th in a season best 5:03.31 and senior
Tatum O'Shea was 15th in a season best 5:05.41.
Grace Schultz, a junior, led the Coyote charge in the 200 IM with a sixth-place 2:04.02 while junior
Taylor Buhr was seventh in 2:04.30. Schultz clocked a personal best 2:03.94 in the morning prelims to move up to third all-time. Freshman
Madeline Schrank posted a personal best 2:05.57 while finish 12th and moved up two spots to eighth all-time.Â
Kahn was the lone South Dakota female in the 'A' final but four athletes were in the 'B' final as Mayer led a 1-2-4-5 finish in the 'B' final, finishing ninth in 23.52. White was 10th in 23.67, Spomer 12th in 23.82 and sophomore Phoebe Paarlnberg 13th in 23.84.
South Dakota women are in second place in the team standings through two days of competition as we head into the heavy part of the championships with seven finals apiece over the final two days.
The Coyote men seat in third place in the team standings heading into Friday's action.
The men's 200 free relay foursome of
Nick Rounds,
Matthew Sorbe,
Jacob Carlson and
James Schreiber finished third in 1:20.82 to earn All-Summit League honors.
Alex Parkinson, a freshman, had the highest individual finish on Thursday with a fifth-place effort of 4:28.71 in the 500 free. His clocking, a personal best, keeps him second all-time, behind school record holder Sorbe, who was sixth in the 'A' final in 4:29.24.
Rounds, a freshman, placed sixth in the 50 free in 20.47 after he posted a personal best 20.19 in the prelims and moved up to third all-time.Â
Charlie Matthews, a sophomore, and
Parker Sonnabend, a fifth-year senior, each secured seventh-place finishes. Matthews posted a finals score of 266.95 on the one-meter diving board while Sonnabend clocked a 1:51.19 in the 200 IM.
Joaquin Contreras-Fallico, a sophomore, posted a personal best of 1:51.01 in the 'B' final of the 200 IM, placing 10th, and jumping two spots to fifth all-time.Â
Teague Bates, a redshirt-freshman, placed 10th on the one-meter diving board with a score of 257.50.
Friday's action will see individual swimming finals in the 100 fly, 400 IM, 200 free, 100 breast and 100 back along with the women's 3 Meter diving and the 400 medley relay.Â
