Schmeichel’s school record highlights strong showing at SDSU Last Chance

02.21.2025

BROOKINGS, S.D. – Averi Schmeichel's school record in the 60-meter hurdles and 11 event titles highlighted South Dakota's day at the SDSU Last Chance Friday night.

Schmeichel was not one of the 11 event winners on Friday for the Coyotes, but her name still goes in the record books as her 8.40 second 60-meter hurdles time is the fastest in school history. She passed Shanice Cannigan's 8.41 seconds from 2018. Schmeichel finished runner-up in the event.

The Coyotes had a strong day in the field events, picking up wins in the men's high jump, women's high jump, women's long jump, men's pole vault, and men's triple jump.

Joe Lynch won the men's high jump at 6-8 and Danii Anglin won the women's high jump at 5-8 ¾. Maddie Olson also earned a top three finish in the women's high jump at 5-7.

Matayah Yellowmule won the women's long jump at 19-2 ¾ and she also placed sixth in the high jump at 5-5. Bre Dunn took fifth in the event at 17-2. In the men's long and triple jumps, Carsen Staehr had a season's best in the triple jump to win at 48-6 ¾ and took second in the long jump at 22-7 ¼. Jayden Green took second in the triple (46-0 ¾) and fourth in the long jump (22-3 ¾).

South Dakota took the top three spots in the men's pole vault, led by Eerik Haamer's season best 18-3 ¾. Spencer Buley took second at 16-10 and Tre Young third at 16-4. On the women's side, Anna Willis took second at 13-7 ¾.

Outside of Schmeichel's record, the Coyote sprints and hurdles performed well Friday. Ethan Baessler and Erin Kinney swept the 60-meters races in 6.75 and 7.31 respectively. Jaden Guthmiller took fourth in the prelims at 6.81 seconds, good for eighth on the Coyote Top 10 list, but didn't run in the finals. Sophie Amin ran the third fastest prelim time in the 60-meter hurdles at 8.61, but didn't run in the finals.

South Dakota swept the 800-meters with a pair of personal bests from Evan Janzen (1:53.73) on the men's side and Sydney Stodden (2:14.76) on the women's side. In the women's mile, USD took the top two spots with Mariah Fenske and Alexus Sindelar crossing the finish line in 4:55.20 and 4:55.37.

Abrielle Jirele rounded out the event titles with a win in the women's 3,000-meters at 10:04.95.

Guthmiller and Tommy Nikkel ran season's bests in the 200 at 22.07 and 22.13 seconds respectively. In the 400-meters, Caden Denker broke 50 seconds at 49.99 for a personal best.

In the women's 400, a season's best time of 57.42 for Caelyn Valandra and a personal best 57.52 for Calli Davis had them place third and fourth.

South Dakota turns their attention to the Summit League Championships, set for Friday and Saturday at the Sanford Jackrabbit Athletic Complex in Brookings.
