LINCOLN, Neb. –
Mason Sindelar is up to two school records set this winter, as his run in the 800-meters highlighted a busy day for the South Dakota track and field program at the Frank Sevigne Husker Invitational Saturday in Lincoln.
Sindelar ran 1:49.34 to set the school record in the 800-meters Saturday afternoon. He placed third in the event, but his time ranks first in the Summit League by nearly two seconds and broke the over 25-year-old record set by Andrew Neugebauer in 1998. It is just the second time a USD runner has broken 1:50 indoor.
South Dakota distance runners added two event wins on the track Saturday. The first of the day came in the women's 600-meters, where
Sydney Stodden ran 1:34.08 to bring home a title. The second came from the reigning Men's Track Peak Performer
Caleb Rivera, who won the men's 3,000-meters in 8:15.42.
Rivera's time puts him third in Coyote history in the event.
Isaac Ochoa took third in the 3,000 with a time of 8:32.5. In other strong distance results,
Berkeley Engelland (2:12.16) and
Ellie Thomas (2:13.52) took second and third in the women's 800-meters.
Moriah Knapp added a runner-up finish in the 3,000 with a time of 10:40.03.
The South Dakota women's 4x400 relay team of Engelland,
Averi Schmeichel, Stodden, and
Sara Reifenrath ran 3:44.86 to take second place. That time ranks fourth in USD history and was over a second faster than the team that took seventh in the Coyote record books last week. It is the second-best time in the Summit League this season.
In short distance events,
Jaden Damiano and
Averi Schmeichel took third in the men's and women's 60-hurdles with respective times of 7.95 seconds and 8.48 seconds.
Sara Reifenrath narrowly missed out on the top three in the women's 200-meters, running a season's best 24.01, the second fastest time in the conference this season.
It was a quiet day for the Yotes in field events, but it wasn't without success. The highlight from the field side came from
Brandon Vander Sluis, who's fifth place mark of 56-9 ¼ ranks third in the conference this season and is a personal best.
Lydia Knapp had a season's best 44-2 ¾ in the shot put. That distance ranks eighth in the conference this season.
The Coyotes will split up next weekend, with some athletes heading down to the Tyson Invitational in Fayetteville, Ark., while the rest of the squad heads north to Brookings for the SDSU Classic. Both meets run Friday and Saturday.
