VERMILLION, S.D. — South Dakota basketball picked up its first win in Summit League play Saturday 82-72 over Denver in the Sanford Coyote Sports Center behind a pair of 20-point performances from
Cameron Fens and
Isaac Bruns.
Fens had a monster day leading the team with 23 points on 10-of-12 shooting to go with 12 rebounds, four blocks and a steal. Fens powered the Coyote attack in the second half, that outscored the Pioneers by 10, with 15 points on a perfect 6-of-6 shooting and corralled eight boards.
Bruns put together an efficient afternoon scoring 20 points on 8-of-12 shooting with one triple and went 3-for-4 from the charity stripe.
Jordan Crawford knocked down a trio of 3-pointers and had 13 points, while
Uzziah Buntyn dished out six assists and added 11 points.
Both teams shot over 50.0% from the field in the first half, with Bruns leading all players with 14 points. The first 20 minutes was a back-and-forth affair with the largest lead by either team being seven by the Yotes late in the half. USD gained the lead at the 11:17 mark behind a 7-0 run facilitated by
Silas Bennion who had five points and an alley-oop to Fens to grab a 16-14 edge. The Pios would answer on the next possession to tie the contest, one of six times the score was tied in the first half.
Off an 11-0 run, the Pios looked to take a lead into the break. However, a pair of free throws from Bruns with three seconds left, followed by a buzzer beating jumper from Bruns, off a steal by Bennion on the out of bounds pass, saw the score knotted at 37 at the end of the first 20 minutes.
Denver opened the second half with a 7-2 run that was quickly erased by a 9-0 Coyote run capped by a Crawford triple to grab a 48-44 edge. Denver tied the game at 48-all at the 14-minute mark, and following a bucket from Fens on the Coyotes would control the lead for the remainder of the game. The teams traded runs in the middle of the second half, before the Yotes used an 8-1 run to build a comfortable nine-point lead with 4:04 left. The Yotes connected on all six of their attempts from the free throw line in the last 1:07 of the game to close out the 82-72 win.
South Dakota is back in the SCSC next Thursday when they host Kansas City at 7 p.m.
