Speak of consistency and South Dakota track and field comes to mind. Year-in and year-out the Coyotes battle for the North Central Conference championship, while at the same time make their presence felt at the NCAA Division II level.
In 1999 the USD women swept the indoor conference meet for the third consecutive year, and the Coyotes finished second at the league outdoor meet after claiming the outdoor title the previous two years. At the NCAA Division II national indoor and outdoor meet, the Coyotes once again finished in the top-10 with a sixth-place showing at the indoor meet and a seventh-place effort at the outdoor classic. In 1998 at the national indoor meet, the Coyotes nearly reached the top with an unprecedented second-place finish - the highest effort ever for an NCC men's or women's team at the national level. The USD men were just as effective by capturing the conference indoor title for the third straight year and the Coyotes were 10th at the national indoor meet. In 1997, USD challenged for the national indoor title finishing third. During the 1999 outdoor season, the Coyotes were second at the NCC meet.
So, what's in store for the 2000 campaign? The Coyotes should have enough depth and high NCC placewinners in many areas to again showcase a program that figures to be a major force in the North Central Conference and NCAA Division II.
