ST. CLOUD, Minn. - The University of South Dakota men's swimming and diving team, behind strong performances from David Nelson, Charles Scribner and Torey Melton, rolled up 609 points and easily won the St. Cloud State University Invitational Saturday. The Coyotes, utilizing extraordinary depth, had a 609-359 advantage over its closest competitor, St. Cloud State, with North Dakota coming in third at 300.50 points. The Coyote women finished fourth at the invitational behind strong performances from Sara Pokela, Sara Hamlet, Kari Kopecky and Molly Connolly. The women's team totaled 297 points and finished behind St. Cloud State (481) Minnesota State, Mankato (431) and North Dakota (343).

The Coyotes won three relays and five individual events as they swam a strong meet at the Invite. Nelson won the 200-yard breast (2:13.57) and the 100-yard breast (1:01.34) events and was a member of the winning 400-yard medley relay (Jeremy Weed, Nelson, Melton, Scribner, 3:43.12). Scribner led a Coyote charge in the 400-yard IM in which USD took the top three places. Scribner won the 400-yard IM (4:24.55) with Melton second (4:28.47) and Tyler Hartl third (4:29.15). Scribner also finished second in the 200-yard IM (2:05.32) and was a member of the 400-yard medley relay and the winning 400-yard free relay. Melton took honors in the 200-yard fly (2:06.27), finished second in the 400-yard IM (4:28.47) and was a member of the winning medley relay. Dakota Tefertiller finished second in the 200-yard breast (2:20.27) behind teammate Nelson. Clint Eckhardt was second in the 500-yard free event (4:57.05), and Eric Dufek, a member of two winning relay squads, was second (55.65) in the 100-yard fly. Tyler Hartl took first in the 100-yard free (50.15) event and was a member of the winning 400-yard free relay. The Coyotes were victorious in the 200-yard relay (Dufek, Ben Britton, Weed, Hartl, 1:31.93) and the 400-yard free relay (Eckhardt, Dufek, Scribner, Hartl, 3:20.51).

The depth of the men's team was shown in this meet and examples include taking the top two places in the 200-yard breast, three of the top five places in the 100-yard free (1st, 4th, 5th) and the 200-yard fly (1st, 3rd, 5th).

For the Coyote women, Pokela and Hamlet won individual events and three relays took second place honors. Pokela won the 100-yard back event (1:02.91) and was third in the 100-yard fly event (1:03.29). Hamlet captured the 500-yard free event (5:22.32) and finished third in the 200-yard free event (2:04.66). Connolly was second in 200-yard breast event (2:38.20) and the 100-yard breast event (1:13.25) and third in the 50-yard free event (25.59). Kopecky, a member of two-second place relay squads, was second in the 50-yard free event (25.25). USD finished second in the 200-yard medley relay (1:57.00), 200-yard free relay (Kopecky, Connolly, Pokela, Ashley Shaper, 1:44.41) and the 400-yard medley relay (Pokela, Jill Stensby, Connolly, Kopecky, 3:54.72).
