COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. - South Dakota's swimming and diving team won the men's division of the Saint John's University / College of Saint Benedict Invitational on Jan. 12-13. The South Dakota men's team rolled up 916.50 points to easily outdistance Gustavus Adolphus with 677.50. Saint John's was third with 534.50. The Coyote women's team finished fifth with 429.50 points. Gustavus Adolphus was first in the women's division with 668 points.

The Coyote men's team had eight first place finishes, including two individual titles by David Nelson and three-winning relay squads. Nelson won the 100-yard breaststroke (1:01.97) and the 200-yard breaststroke (2:15.19). Also individually for South Dakota, Michael Kaiser won the 100-yard backstroke (56.29), Charles Scribner took the 400-IM (4:19.63), and Torey Melton won the 200-yard butterfly (2:03.07). The Coyotes won the 200-yard medley relay, 1:41.28, 400-yard medley relay, 3:41.35, and the 800-yard freestyle relay in 7:13.44. Clint Eckhardt was second in the 500-yard freestyle in 4:51.01 and Martin Telefont was second in the 200-yard butterfly, 2:04.73.

The South Dakota women's team received a first place finish from Sara Hamlet in the 500-yard freestyle (5:21.08) and she was second in the 200 freestyle (2:01.94). Sara Pokela was second in the 200-yard IM (2:17.08) and 100-yard backstroke (1:02.75) and she finished third in the 200-yard backstroke (2:15.56). Molly Connolly was second (25.68) and Kari Kopecky, fourth (25.70) in the 50-yard freestyle. The Coyote women's team also took second in both the 200-yard medley relay (1:57.12) and the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:42.57).
