Swimming & Diving Teams Finish In Top Five At NCC Championships

GRAND FORKS, N.D. - The University of South Dakota men's swimming and diving team finished second and the women's was fifth at the North Central Conference championships held Feb. 22-24 at Grand Forks, N.D. North Dakota totaled 1,092 points to win the men's division as South Dakota finished second with 910. North Dakota won the women's competition with 1,069 to easily outdistance second place Northern Colorado with 620. The Coyote women's team had 372 points. David Nelson (Baudette, Minn.) of USD won the 200-breaststroke in 2:05.94, which qualified him for the NCAA nationals. He also finished second in the 100-yard breaststroke (58.25). Individual winners included Benjamin Britton (Green River, Wyo.) in the 50-yard freestyle (21.36) and Kari Kopecky (Warroad, Minn.) in the 50-yard freestyle (24.30).

Kopecky was named NCC Freshman of the Year. Both Nelson (100, 200 breaststroke) and Kopecky (50, 100 freestyle) qualified for nationals. Kopecky set a school record in the leadoff of the 200-freestyle time trial, registering 23.90.

Men's Team Recap: The Coyotes finished second in the 200-Yard Medley Relay (1:34.84), 400-Medley Relay (3:33.50), 200-Yard Freestyle Relay, 2nd, 1:25.87, 400-Yard Freestyle Relay (3:09.69) and 800-Yard Freestyle Relay (6:58.25). Chad Gohman (Cottage Grove, Minn.) earned a pair of second place finishes in 1-Meter Diving (409.05) and 3-Meter Diving (339.60). Torey Melton (Milwaukie, Ore.) was third in the 400-yard IM (4:13.53) while Tyler Hartl (Billings, Mont.) captured a third place finish in the 200-yard IM (1:56.69). Clint Eckhardt (Hastings, Neb.) was third in the 1650 freestyle (16:45.40). Drew Fleek (Lincoln, Neb.) was third in the 200-yard backstroke (1:57.18). Eric Dufek (Lander, Wyo.) was third in the 200-yard butterfly (1:58.50).

Women's Team Recap: South Dakota finished second in the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:38.71) and the 200-yard medley relay was third (1:51.45). Sara Hamlet (Aurora, Ore.) took a second place finish in the 500-yard freestyle (5:10.99). Kopecky was third in the 100-yard freestyle (53.98) and Molly Connolly (Elkhorn, Neb.) was 4th (54.53). Connolly also finished fourth in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:09.26).
