Softball team defeats Truman State for third win of season; Game against Wayne State (Mich.) rained out

VERMILLION, S.D. (March 13, 2002) - The University of South Dakota (3-6) picked up its third win of the season and stopped a four-game winning streak by Truman State (4-4) with a 4-2 victory over the Bulldogs on Wednesday, March 13, at the Rebel Spring Games in Orlando, Fla. The Coyotes were schedule to play Wayne State (Mich.) today, but the game was cancelled due to inclement weather. South Dakota continues on its Florida trip with a double header against Rollins tomorrow (March 14) at noon (CST) in Winter Park, Fla. The Coyotes return to Orlando on Friday to play Tiffin at 3:10 p.m. and Wayne State (Mich.) at 6:50 p.m. (CST) at the Osceola Sports Complex.

In the Truman State game, South Dakota capitalized on four Bulldog errors in the top of the third inning to score three runs and take a 4-0 lead. South Dakota scored early when sophomore Kaja Martinson (Burnsville, Minn.) hit a single to score freshman Angela Palma (Omaha, Neb.) in the second inning. In the third inning, South Dakota scored three unearned runs as a results of four errors by Truman State. Freshman Lana Nixon (Stonewall, Manitoba) reached third on an error and scored when sophomore Amie Mertens (Ham Lake, Minn.) advanced on an error. After three straight errors to load the bases, Palma had a two-run single.

Truman State scored in the bottom of the third on a sacrifice fly, and scored again in the bottom of the fourth, but the Coyotes hung on to the lead to win, 4-2. As the winning pitcher, Palma went the full seven innings, striking out five, and giving up five hits, two earned runs and two walks.
