SAN ANGELO, TEXAS (May 25, 2002) - South Dakota senior Tom Green of Hornick, Iowa, concluded his brilliant track and field career at The University of South Dakota with fourth place finishes in both the 100 and 200 meter dashes at the NCAA Division II Nationals in St. Angelo, Texas on Saturday night.
Green broke his own state and school record in the 200 meters by clocking a 20.77. Earlier this evening, Green had a 10.15 in the 100 meters and finished fourth. With those two All-American finishes, he finished his career as an eight-time All-American.
Aside from Green, John Kehoe of Rapid City, S.D.,ran a 47.92 and was sixth in the 400 meter dash.
The South Dakota men's 4x400 relay which clocked a 3:10.08 time in the prelims on Friday will compete later on Saturday night. A rain/lightning storm forced delay of the meet. The men's team is scheduled to run about 10:30 p.m. on Saturday. The relay squad includes Eric Van Laecken of Parkston, S.D.; Pat Belling of Omaha, Neb.; Shaun Fransen of Edgerton, Minn.; and Kehoe. The Coyotes enter the finals with the fourth best time.
In the women's competition, senior Sandy Pelkofer of Rapid City, S.D., finished her career with a sixth place finish in the pole vault. Pelkofer, who is a now a five-time All-American, went 11'10. Freshman Marci Miller of Rapid City, S.D., went 11'4.25 and finished 16th at the nationals.
On Thursday, Green clocked a personal best and a state and USD record of 10.1 in the 100 meters. That time will qualify him for the USA National Track and Field Championships later this year. to qualify for the USA National Championships. He will be the first USD athlete ever to qualify for those championships.
On Friday, sophomore Brianne Vette of Spearfish finished sixth overall in the heptathlon with 5,086 points. Vette had a mark of 5.73m in the long jump, threw a javelin 102'0, and ran the 800-meter run in 2:21.20.
Sophomore Jennie Buller (Utica, S.D.), who had set a school record in the steeplechase in the prelims (11:23.93), finished 12th in the 3,000-meter steeplechase finals, clocking a 3:10.09.
Senior Mandy Muller (Schuyler, Neb.) was 15th in the discus throw with a toss of 135'7 (41.34m).
On Thursday, Muller was 10th in the hammer throw with a mark of 164-09 (50.22m).
