GRAND FORKS, N.D. -- The University of South Dakota men's team finished second with 936 points at the North Central Conference Swimming and Diving Championships in Grand Forks, N.D. USD women's team finished fifth with 401 points.
UND swept the men's and women's titles. UND won the men's title with 1,201 points while the UND women had 860 points.
South Dakota coach Ron Allen was named the Co-NCC Men's Coach of the Year. It was the fourth time that Allen has received that honor. He was honored with Minnesota State-Mankato men's coach Phil Rhoade.
Overall, the Coyotes had 22 "B" cuts and six "A" cuts for nationals. In all, USD set five school records, including one on Saturday when they recorded one "A" cut and 10 "B" cuts.
SATURDAY REVIEW
Audrey Donley, a sophomore from Arvada, Colo., won the 1,650 free and set a school record with a national "B" cut clocking of 17:44.25. Freshman Jessica Tietz of Williston, N.D. finished fourth with a "B" cut time of 18:08.20. Her time was the seventh best clocking in school history.
Dirk Craft, a sophomore from Palmer, Alaska, had an "A" national qualifying time of 45.98 in the 100 freestyle prelims. In recording the best time of the prelims, Craft had the sixth best time in school history, just .60 from a school record. He finished third in the finals (46.22). John Murman, a freshman from Lincoln, Neb., finished fourth with a "B" cut of 46.22, ninth best in school history.
Tim Byers, a sophomore from Billings, Mont., finished second in the 200 backstroke with a "B" cut of 1:53.65, which was the second best in school history. Drew Fleek, a senior from Lincoln, Neb., had a "B" national qualifying cut in the 200 backstroke prelims in 1:55.55, the eighth best in school history. He finished fourth in the finals (1:56.33).
Matt Lind, a sophomore from Kearney, Neb., finished second in the 200 breastroke finals with a "B" cut of 2:08.13. His time was the fifth fastest in school history.
Garth Meacham, a sophomore from West Des Moines, Iowa, had a "B" cut of 1:56.49 and finished fifth in the 200 butterfly prelims. He was seventh in the finals (1:58.32). His time was fifth fastest in school history.
Molly Connolly, a junior from Elkhorn, Neb., had a "B" cut of 53.11 in the 100 free prelims which was the second best in school history. She finished third in the finals of 53.27, fourth best all-time at USD. Kari Kopecky, a junior from Roosevelt, Minn., had a "B" cut of 53.36 in the prelims and sixth fastest in school history and finished fifth in the finals (53.43, eighth best in school history).

On Friday, USD qualified two relays for the NCAA Division II nationals. Eight other South Dakota swimmers had national qualifying "B" cuts.
In the 200 free relay, South Dakota women's squad finished second but automatically qualified for the NCAA Division II nationals. The team of Kari Kopecky (Roosevelt, Minn.), Molly Connolly (Elkhorn, Neb.), Audrey Donley (Arvada, Colo.) and Karen Burke (Carson City, Nev.) was clocked in 1:37.08, finishing behind Nebraska-Omaha which set a NCC record with a time of 1:36.22. South Dakota had an "A" cut and set a school record by breaking the 1996 mark of 1:38.00 (Healey, Speiker, Jansky, Shearard). It was the fourth school record set by South Dakota at the NCC championships.
The USD men's 400 medley relay qualified for nationals with an "A" clocking of 3:26.03. The team included Tim Byers (Billings, Mont.), Dirk Craft (Palmer, Alaska), Garth Meacham (West Des Moines, Iowa), and John Murman (Lincoln, Neb.). The squad finished only behind the UND team that broke the NCC record with a time of 3:24.89.
Matt Lind, who had an "A" cut of 50.65 in the prelims, and Garth Meacham (51.93) had a national "B" cut in the 100 butterfly. Lind's time was the third fastest and Meacham's the eight best in school history. Lind finished fourth in 51.18 (also a "B" cut time) and Meacham had a 52.20 ("B" cut) for sixth place in the finals.
Craft had a "B" cut in the 100 breast finals, clocking a 59.00. His time was the ninth fastest in school history.
Tim Byers (Billings, Mont.) and Jeremy Weed (Verona, Wisc.) had "B" cuts in the 100 backstroke. Byers had a "B" cut of 52.15 in the finals, finishing third and recording the third best time in school history. Weed had a "B" cut of 53.13 in the prelims and finished sixth (53.42) in the finals. Weed's prelim time was seventh best in school history.
John Murman had a "B" cut in the 200 freestyle in the prelims with a clocking of 1:43.57 which ties him for the 10th best time in school history. He finished sixth in the finals (1:45.59).
Connolly recorded two of the five best times in the 100 breaststroke in school history. She had a "B" cut in the women's 100 breaststroke prelims with a time of 1:07.82, which is the second best time in school history. She finished fifth in 1:08.52 in the finals, which is the fifth best time in South Dakota history. Jill Stensby (Portland, Ore.) also had a "B" cut in the prelims with a time of 1:08.28, which is fourth best all-time at South Dakota. She was eighth in the finals (1:09.27).

In all, South Dakota set three school records in the first day.
The South Dakota men's 200 medley relay finished second but had an "A" cut to automatically qualify for nationals. The team of Jeremy Weed (Verona, Wisc.), Dirk Craft (Palmer, Alaska), Tyler Scheer (Lincoln, Neb.), and Alex Smith (Houston, Texas) finished in 1:33.55. The mark established a school record which was set in 1992 (1:33.67 - King, Shottenkirk, Clausen, Huber).
Audrey Donley, a sophomore from Arvada, Colo., scored USD's first points of the meet with a third place finish in the women's 1,000 freestyle (10:41.25) on Wednesday night. Donley, who had an NCAA Division II nationals "B" qualifying time, broke her own school record in the event set in 2002 (10:42.33).
Matt Lind, a sophomore from Kearney, Neb., had the top preliminary time in the men's 200 yard IM with a clocking of 1:53.21 which automatically qualified him for NCAA Division II nationals. Lind set a school record, cracking the 1994 record of of Jason Knudsen, who had a 1:54.33 in 1994. Lind finished second in the finals with a clocking of 1:53.66, just three-hundredths out of first place.
Craft, a sophomore from Palmer, Alaska, won the 50 freestyle with a clocking of 20.87, which is an "A" cut and qualifies him for nationals. However in the prelims, he recorded the best time of the 50 freestyle preliminaries with a clocking of 20.72, which was also an NCAA Division II "A" qualifying time for nationals. The mark also was the second best time in school history (Zach Weiss, 20.28, 1999). Tim Byers, a sophomore from Billings, Mont., had the second best time in the 50-free prelims, going 21.20 which is an NCAA Division II "B" qualifying time. Alex Smith, a freshman from Houston, Texas, was fourth in prelims with a NCAA Division II "B" time of 21.34. Byers had the sixth and Smith, the 10th, best 50 free times in school history. Byers finished second in the finals with a 21.24 and Smith was seventh in 21.74.
For the USD women's team, Molly Connolly, a junior from Elkhorn, Neb., and Kari Kopecky, a junior from Roosevelt, Minn., by "B" cuts in the 50 free. Kopecky finished third in the finals with a time of 24.34, and Connolly, who had a 24.34 clocking in the prelims, was fifth in 24.49 in the finals, both had "B" cuts . Both Kopecky and Connolly's time of 24.34 ranks fourth all-time on the South Dakota top 10 charts.
Donley also had a "B" cut in the 500 freestyle. She went 5:12.33 in the prelims. She was fifth in the finals with a time of 5:14.86.
