WAYNE, NEB. --
Dan Tolsma of the South Dakota men's track and field squad set a school and state of South Dakota record in winning the hammer throw at the Morningside Open, which opened on Friday with a throws competition in Wayne, Neb.
Tolsma, a senior from Vermillion, S.D., tossed the hammer 184'11 which crushes his own mark of 181'10 set a year ago. Tolsma won the competition with a throw that is a high provisional mark for the NCAA Division II nationals which will be held later this spring.
Aside from Tolsma, USD's Mark Leibl, a senior from Menno, S.D., finished second in the javelin with a throw of 184'5.
The Morningside Open will continue on Saturday at Roberts Stadium in Sioux City, Iowa.
