USD's Tighe and Smolczyk Named to the NCC Women's Academic-At Large Team

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. - Two student-athletes at The University of South Dakota have been selected to the Academic All-North Central Conference Women's At-Large team by a vote of the league's sports information directors on Monday, according to an announcement released on Monday by the league office. Kristi Tighe of the USD golf team and Jill Smolczyk of the USD swimming and diving team were selected to the 13-member squad, which consists of student-athletes from golf, tennis and swimming and diving teams. The At-Large squad has a combined grade point average of 3.77.

Tighe, who has a 3.810 GPA in nursing, was a member of the USD women's golf squad that qualified for the NCAA Division II regional tournament for the third straight year. Tighe, a sophomore from Homer, Neb., was also a member of the 2005-06 USD women's basketball squad.

Smolczyk, who has a 3.783 GPA in psychology, earned her second All-American honor during the NCAA Division II Swimming and Diving National Championships earlier this year. Smolczyk of Omaha, Neb., led the Coyotes to an eighth-place finish at the NCAA Division II nationals, which tied the 1999 squad for the best finish ever by a USD women's team. Smolczyk picked up her second-career All-American honor by placing seventh in the 1-meter diving competition at the Division II nationals this spring.
