USD's Jill Smolczyk Wins National Title in 1-meter Diving at NCAA Division II Swimming and Diving Championships

COLUMBIA, Mo. - Senior Jill Smolczyk of The University of South Dakota won the first-ever national title by a Coyote women's swimmer or diver at the NCAA Division II Swimming and Diving Championships on Friday in Columbia, Mo. Smolczyk claimed the crown in 1-meter diving.

Smolczyk of Omaha, Neb., earned her second All-American honor of the championships and the sixth of her career as a Coyote. Smolczyk, who is a two-time North Central Conference Women's Outstanding Diver, had a score of 421.15 points. She just missed winning two national titles in diving when she was second on the 3-meter board on Wednesday.

Emilie Kluth (Sr., Columbus, Neb.) claimed her second career All-American honor with a fourth-place finish (394.65 points) in 1-meter diving.

After three days at nationals, the Coyote women's team sits eighth in the team standings with 148 points. Drury (Mo.) University and Truman State are tied for the team lead with 351 points. The rest of the top-10 includes UC-San Diego, 252; North Dakota, 246; Wayne State (Mich.), 174; Nebraska-Omaha, 161; Clarion, 158; South Dakota, 148; West Chester, 145; and Ouachita Baptist, 141.

So far at nationals, the Coyote women's swimming and diving team has broken seven school records and recorded eight All-American performances.

The Coyotes also had two honorable mention All-American performances. Erin Wagoner (Jr., Newcastle, Wyo.) earned honorable mention All-American honors with a 14th-place finish (2:09.12) in the 200 butterfly final. However, Wagoner broke her own school record in the 200 butterfly with a time of 2:08.13 in the prelims on Friday afternoon.

The Coyote 800-freestyle relay also claimed honorable mention All-American honors by finishing 13th in 7:51.20. The squad included Leita Rolfe (Sr., Newcastle, Wyo.), Megan Gordon (Sr., Grand Rapids, Minn.), Sallie Collins (Fr., Hastings, Minn.) and Wagoner. In the prelims of the 800 freestyle relay, Rolfe broke a school record in the 200 free with a clocking of 1:52.58 (old record, Sarah Jansky, 1:53.38, 1998). Gordon also finished 17th in the 100 backstroke with a clocking of :58.27, which is the second-fastest time in school history (Gordon, :57.96, 2005).

The nationals will conclude on Saturday at the Missouri Aquatic Center in Columbia, Mo.
