TEMPE, ARIZ.-- The University of South Dakota track and field team had three top-ten finishes at the Baldy Castillo Invitational hosted by Arizona State University.
The meet marked the first Division I outdoor competition ever by The University of South Dakota.
"I am really proud of our kids," Gottlesben said. "They all threw good early season marks and started out the outdoor season in great fashion."
On the first day of competition, Preston Scott (Sr., Parker, S.D.) finished 9th in the hammer throw with a mark of 51.46m. Ben Walters (Sr., Lennox, S.D.) was right behind him earning a 10th place finish with a throw of 51.05m.
Amy Velthoff (Sr., Harlan, Iowa) placed 13th (42.08) in preliminaries but did not place in the finals.
On the second day of the meet, USD's Bill Lane (Fr., Sioux City, Iowa) earned a 16th place finish in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 57.10.
Dylan Grau (Sr., Sioux City, Iowa) earned a top 5 finish in the men's javelin throw. He was fifth in the event with a throw of 60.49m
Scott, placed 13th in the shot put preliminaries on day two.
South Dakota was competing against individuals from schools such as Kentucky, Louisville, Arizona State, North Dakota and BYU.
