USD 4x800 Crushes Records at John Dalton Meet

Vermillion, S.D. - The South Dakota women's 4x800-meter relay broke the school and facility record to lead a pack of impressive performances by the Coyote track and field teams at the John Dalton Meet on Saturday in the DakotaDome. Multiple USD student-athletes posted season-best marks to improve their position on the Great West Conference Performance Lists.

Sophomore Natalie Newman (Overland Park, Kan.), freshman Carol Miller (Mead, Neb.), senior Ramsey Fitzsimmons (Yankton, S.D.) and sophomore Emma Erickson (Gayville, S.D.) combined to run a 9:15.84 and smash the school record by 25 seconds. After an opening leg of 2:23 by Newman, Miller kept the Coyotes on track with a 2:22. Fitzsimmons gave USD some breathing room with a 2:17 to allow Erickson's 2:12 to run away with the overall title. USD's previous best was a 9:40 run in 1999, while the DakotaDome record of 9:18 was run in 2001 by North Dakota State.

Junior Kenna Wolter (Santa Maria, Calif.) won an overall title at 18-5 3/4 in the women's long jump to jump to the top of the GWC list in a second event. She also improved her conference-leading mark in the triple jump by winning an overall title in 38-5 1/2. Sophomores Cody Linder (Plattsmouth, Neb.) and Chad Pinkelman (Norfolk, Neb.) went 1-2 in the university men's side to move into the same position on the GWC list with marks of 46-11 3/4 and 45-8 1/2, respectively.

Fitzsimmons moved into second in the conference in the women's 800 meters after running 2:17 to win the university side and now only trails Erickson on the performance list.

Freshman Ashley Sveum (Eau Claire, Wisc.) claimed an overall title in the 600 meters with a 1:40.

The USD women's 4x400-meter relay claimed an overall title in 4:04 to move into fourth in the GWC.
