Naperville, Ill. -- South Dakota senior pitcher/designated hitter Mel Johnson has been named the
Great West Conference Player of the Week in softball, the league announced on Friday. It is the second time this season a Coyote player has earned the weekly honor.
Johnson (Sioux Falls, S.D.) had an outstanding week for the Coyotes, helping the team to a 6-2 mark over their final eight games in Florida. Johnson hit .346 with two homers, one double and 10 RBI. Johnson only struck out once in 26 at-bats. The senior also was 2-0 with a 3.11 ERA on the mound for the Coyotes.
For the season, Johnson leads the Coyotes with a .312 average to go with two homers and 15 RBI.
South Dakota resumes action on Sunday at Big Ten foe Iowa. The doubleheader begins at noon Sunday in Iowa City, Iowa.
