VERMILLION, S.D. - The South Dakota swimming and diving teams return to action Saturday when they face rival South Dakota State in a dual in Brookings, S.D. The dual begins at 2 p.m. in Brookings, S.D.
The action is the first for the Coyotes since Dec. 10, when the South Dakota women (3-4 duals) topped SDSU and the men (2-4 duals) lost in dual action at the DakotaDome.
The Coyotes are entering the final stretch of competition as they preparation for the Summit League Championships, which will be held in Rochester, Mich., on Feb. 15-18.

The South Dakota women's swimming and diving team set eight records on the day on its way to a 135-108 win over in-state rival South Dakota State in dual meet action on Dec. 10 in Vermillion, S.D. The Coyote men also had a big day, setting 11 records in a 126-111 loss to SDSU.
For the women, two relays set school records (meters) and pool records, while senior Lizz Hoffman (Eureka, S.D.) set school and pool records in the 100 freestyle and a school record in the 400 freestyle. Junior Shannon Moceri (South Lyon, Mich.) set a new school record in the 100 breaststroke.
The Coyote men had an excellent day despite falling short in the dual. Senior Thad Stoddard (Douglas, Wyo.) set four records on the day, while senior Dane Van Arkel (Colorado Springs, Colo.) set three. Senior Terry Rolfe (Newcastle, Wyo.) also set two records, while the Coyotes' 400 freestyle relay set school and pool records as well.
The Coyote women's 400 medley relay set a new school and pool record with a time of 4:27.15 on its way to the win. That consisted by freshman Paige Stavely (Hemlock, Mich.), Moceri, freshman Molly Knowles (Lockport, Ill.) and freshman Corey Wannamaker (New Berlin, Wis.).
Hoffman won the 100 freestyle, setting new school and pool records with a time of 58.14. Hoffman broke her own record of 58.34 in that event. Hoffman also set a new school record of 4:26.83 in claiming the victory in the 400 freestyle at 4:26.83, crushing the old record she set earlier this year by more than two seconds. The senior also captured the 200 freestyle with a time of 2:06.98.
Moceri set a new USD record in winning the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:13.84.
The Coyotes won the 400 meter freestyle relay with a pool and school record time of 3:58.68. That consisted of junior Kaitlyn Jefferson (Westland, Mich.), freshman Torie Buberl (Stillwater, Minn.), freshman Lydia Engberg (Bismarck, N.D.) and sophomore Mariah Anderson (Kearney, Neb.).
For the South Dakota men, Stoddard won the 200 freestyle with a pool and school meter record of 1:55.44, topping the old school record he set earlier this year by .11 seconds. Stoddard also set new school and pool records - by .01 seconds - in winning the 100 butterfly (56.58).
Van Arkel broke a school and pool record that lasted more than 20 years in winning the 50 freestyle. Van Arkel won the event with a time of 23.24, topping the old record held by two people by .10 seconds. Van Arkel also set a new school record in winning the 100 freestyle at 51.71.
Rolfe shattered the pool and school records in the 200 IM, winning with a time of 2:07.75. The old school record was set by Rolfe on Jan. 1, 2011 of 2:12.41. Rolfe won the 100 backstroke as well, missing a school record by .16 seconds with a winning time of 57.31.
The Coyotes also won the 400 freestyle relay with a school and pool record of 3:31.79. That consisted by Stoddard, junior Cody Horton (Mitchell, S.D.), senior Gabe Sands (Greeley, Colo.) and Van Arkel.

Seniors Lizz Hoffman and Thad Stoddard were each named Summit League Swimming and Diving Athletes of the Week, the league announced on Dec. 13. The award is the fourth of Hoffman's career and second this season, while it is Stoddard's first of his career.
Hoffman (Eureka, S.D.) was named the Summit League Female Athlete of the Week after a pair of outstanding performances in duals against Nebraska-Omaha and SDSU. She led the Coyotes on the weekend with six individual event wins and two school records. The senior opened the weekend the against future league opponent Nebraska-Omaha with first-place finishes in the 50 free (24.08), 200 free (1:52.86) and 200 IM (2:07.68). Her times in the 200 free and 200 IM rank in the league's top five this season. She then led her squad to a 135-108 win over league rival South Dakota State. Hoffman tallied three more event wins in the 100 free (58.14), 200 free (2:06.98) and the 400 free (4:26.83), setting a school and poll record in the 100 free and a school record in the 400 free.
Stoddard (Douglas, Wyo.) claimed Summit League Male Athlete of the Week honors after a pair of strong showings in duals against Morningside and South Dakota State last weekend. He started the week off leading the Coyotes to a 151-80 win over Morningside with a first-place finish in the 100 free, setting a pool record time of 48.01. The senior then won the 200 free (1:55.44) and 100 fly (56.58) against SDSU with school and pool records in both events. He was also part of three winning relay teams on the week.
