UTEP edges South Dakota, 4-3

Feb. 9, 2013

Final Stats

DES MOINES, Iowaâ€"UTEP won two of three doubles matches and split six singles matches in a 4-3 win against South Dakota Saturday at the Knapp Tennis Center on the campus of Drake University. It was the first loss of the season for the Coyotes (4-1).

South Dakota won a pair of superbreakers to pad its scoring. Hafsa Laraibi rattled off eight straight points to earn a 6-4, 0-6, 10-7 win against Gabi Vazquez at No. 3 singles. Veronika Makashov, who played her freshman season for UTEP, beat Matilda Rose Tench 3-6, 6-3, 11-9 at No. 5 singles. Yamini Reddy earned a straight-set win against Jaime-Leigh Michau at No. 6 singles.

I was pleased with how we competed in tie-breaker situations, said USD head coach Malcolm Gilreath. Those have been a point of focus for us in practice and it worked out for us this time.

The Miners' top duo of Rebeca Calvillo and Martina Trierweiler combined to earn three of UTEP's four points. Tench and Michau beat Makashov and Reddy, 8-2, at No. 3 doubles to help the Miners secure the doubles point.

We competed well, said Gilreath. We won one of the doubles matches and we are showing improvement in that area. We won some close matches down low, which speaks to our depth. I'm looking forward to facing Chicago tomorrow.

South Dakota faces Illinois-Chicago at 9:30 a.m. Sunday in Des Moines.
