Sioux Falls, S.D.--University of South Dakota student-athletes won eight collegiate events at the Howard Wood Dakota Relays Friday on a day when coaches wore hats, gloves and sometimes two coats to stay warm. The two-day event concludes Saturday where the forecast calls for a 60-percent chance of rain and a high near 50 degrees.
The Coyotes dominated many of the field events and swept the men's and women's 200-meter dash. Freshman Chris Nielsen, who holds the Summit League's top men's time, won Friday in 21.81s. Senior Alexa Duling, known mainly for her work in the hurdles, ran the open 200 for the first time this season and won it while turning in the fifth-fastest time in the Summit League at 24.32s. Sophomores Analisa Huschle (24.97s) and Molly Ervin (25.21s) placed third and fourth, respectively.
In men's field events, junior Denton Stephens took the hammer title (181 feet), junior Cody Snyder won the discus (165-feet-5-inches) and freshmen Peter Chapman and Daquan Brooks earned wins in the pole vault and javelin, respectively. Chapman vaulted 16 feet even â€" fourth-best in the Summit. Brooks threw 169-feet-1-inch â€" sixth-best in the Summit.
South Dakota won gold, silver and bronze in the women's triple jump. Student assistant Kenna Wolter reached 39-feet-9.75-inches to win the event. Sophomore Tess Johnson competed in the triple for the first time this season and turned in the League's 14th-best mark at 36-feet-5.5-inches. Senior Ashlea Johnson was 1.25 inches behind Tess Johnson in third place.
Coyote junior Breanna Janovy won the women's shot put with a heave of 43-feet-7.25-inches. Other notable performances included senior Benson Langat, who turned in a top-15 Summit League time while placing third in the 5,000-meter run (15:04). Junior Jeff Mettler took a day off from long distance and entered in the 800-meter run where he ran 1:56.93 â€" ninth-best in the Summit. Sophomore Rachel Weinandt has the ninth-best Summit time in the women's 800 after placing fourth with a time of 2:17.04.
