VERMILLION, S.D.—South Dakota track and field will compete at the Summit League Outdoor Track Championships in Muncie, Ind., while softball will take part in their first Summit League Softball Championships in Fargo, N.D., this week in Coyote athletics.

Track and field will participate in the Summit League Outdoor Track Championships beginning on Thursday at 11 a.m. The three-day event will take place in Muncie, Ind. The Coyotes have six men and three women who enter the championship as the league leader in their individual events.

USD spent Friday and Saturday at the Howard Wood Dakota Relays. Sophomore Emily Grove set a meet record in the women’s pole vault by clearing 13-feet-11.75-inches, while 13 other ‘Yotes were event champions at the meet.

It will be the first ever trip to the Summit League Softball Championships for the Coyotes (29-18, 12-7 SL), who enter as the tournament’s three-seed. USD’s first game will be Thursday at 4 p.m. against Fort Wayne at Ellig Sports Complex in Fargo. The Mastodons defeated the Coyotes 2-1 and 7-4 (9 inn.) in a doubleheader in Vermillion on April 13.

USD played three games against North Dakota State in Fargo on Friday and Saturday and won the series opener 5-1. The ‘Yotes were the only league team to defeat NDSU all season and ended the Bison’s 15-game winning streak. Erica Denney went all seven innings and struck out six while only allowing three hits and one unearned run in the win.
