SAN DIEGO, Calif.--South Dakota rebounded from a 5-1 loss to Saint Mary's to beat an eight-win Cal State Fullerton program that was receiving votes in the top 25, 4-2, Saturday on the second day of a tournament hosted by San Diego State.
The win was the first in four games for the Coyotes (4-3) in San Diego. USD wraps up the tournament Sunday with an 11 a.m. CST contest with Texas State.
USD sophomore first baseman Yvon Minogue saw a five-game hitting streak end in game one Saturday, only to record three hits, including a first-inning RBI single, in the Coyotes' win against the Titans (8-2). Minogue singled and scored to make it 4-1 in the second inning. She is 5 of 12 in California (.417) and 9 of 18 (.500) on the season.
Freshman Rachel Cue (2-1) pitched her second complete game of the season in getting the win against Fullerton. She allowed seven hits and retired the side in order three times. Holding a 4-2 lead with the bases loaded and two outs in the bottom of the sixth inning, Cue struck out Leesa Harris to end the threat. Cue retired the top of the Titans' lineup in order in the seventh.
USD junior center fielder Katie Dinning got two of the Coyotes' six hits against the Gaels (3-5) and is batting .357 at the tournament (5 of 14). Saint Mary's scored four runs in the third inning to take a 5-0 lead and rode the arm of starting pitcher Sarah Lira (3-2) who allowed four hits and struck out three in six innings of work.
