Kritenbrink, Coyotes Place Second at Creighton Classic

OMAHA, Neb. - Kendall Kritenbrink had 29 kills and 21 digs to lead South Dakota volleyball to a five-set win over Creighton (25-23, 25-23, 18-25, 32-34, 15-10 ), and set a new personal digs record for a three-set match in a loss to No. 16 Illinois (25-18, 25-15, 25-22 ) during the final day of the Creighton Classic. The Coyotes (6-6) finished second at the tournament with Kritenbrink and Riley Haug both earning all-tournament honors.

Kritenbrink's kills total against Creighton (7-6) was the third highest single-match total in program history and her 21 digs was a career record. She now holds five of the top seven single-match kills totals in program history. It was also the first time she has recorded 20-plus kills and digs in the same match.

Sydney Dimke tallied 12 kills and four blocks against Creighton while Haug dug out 23 Bluejay attacks. Brittany Jessen had 52 assists and Melissa Firtko had seven total blocks.

As a program, South Dakota recorded its first victory over Creighton. The teams have now met in each of the past four seasons.

Creighton's Kelli Browning finished with a career-high 21 kills while Maggie Baumert had a career-high assist effort with 62. Kate Elman led the Bluejays in digs with 21.

USD was out-killed in every set except the fifth, but forced Creighton into in 35 attack errors during the match. The Coyotes rallied from an 18-13 deficit in the first set behind three kills from Dimke and four errors from the Creighton offense. USD followed up by recording a .500 hitting percentage in the second set with 17 kills and one attack error on 32 attacks.

After dropping the third and fourth sets, Kritenbrink recorded five kills in the fifth set while Firtko added three more to lead the Coyotes to the win. South Dakota had nine kills and two errors in the set while Creighton had five kills and four errors.

Illinois (8-3) swept the Coyotes to take the tournament title. Liz McMahon led the Fighting Illini with 13 kills on 27 attacks and Morganne Criswell added nine kills on 18 attacks. The Coyotes had 22 attack errors, six serving errors and five receiving errors in the match.

Kritenbrink recorded her fourth straight double-double in the loss with 10 kills and 16 digs. Those 16 digs were a personal record for a three-set match for Kritenbrink. Reeg and Dimke both recorded nine kills, Haug had 18 digs and Jessen tallied 27 assists.

Kritenbrink and Haug both earned all-tournament honors after the final match. Kritenbrink tallied 55 kills and 48 digs over the tournament, which averaged out to be 4.58 kills and 4.0 digs per set. Haug had 64 digs during the tournament, or an average of 5.33 per set.

South Dakota will start its Summit League schedule on Friday by hosting North Dakota State at 7 p.m.
