CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas--South Dakota out-hit Wisconsin Friday, but it was the Big Ten's Badgers that swept a doubleheader 6-1 and 4-1 at the Islanders Invitational hosted by Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. The Coyotes (1-5) resume tournament play at 10 a.m. Saturday against UAB.
Wisconsin (5-4) took advantage of five defensive miscues by the Coyotes in game one. After Allie Daly gave South Dakota a 1-0 lead with a sacrifice fly in the top of the first, the Badgers scored three runs in the bottom of the first and two more in the second to take a 5-1 lead. Only one of those runs was earned due to four errors.
Taylor-Paige Stewart (2-2) allowed four hits and struck out nine in her complete-game performance for Wisconsin. Coyote starter Rachel Cue (1-3) went the distance for South Dakota, allowing five hits and two earned runs while striking out four. Neither starting pitcher allowed an extra base hit.
Stefanni LaJeunesse's two-run double in the first inning of game two held up for Wisconsin. The Badgers added an unearned run in the second inning and scored on a pinch-hit RBI by Stewart in the fourth.
South Dakota loaded the bases with two outs in the final inning and Katie Dinning delivered an RBI double down the left field line. The final out was recorded when left fielder Katie Christner threw out Yvon Minogue trying to go from first base to third base on the play. The out was recorded before Keil touched home from second to make it a 4-1 final.
Mariah Watts (1-0) scattered eight hits to earn the win in the circle for the Badgers. Madison Frain (0-2) allowed five hits in seven innings for the Coyotes.
