CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas—South Dakota scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to beat UAB 4-3 in game one and tied Corpus Christi 5-5 (darkness) in game two on the second day of the Islanders Classic. The Coyotes (2-5-1) return Sunday for a final game against Corpus Christi at 11:30 a.m.
South Dakota third baseman Matley Jones tied game one with a two-out single to left field and catcher Allie Daly plated the winning run with an RBI single to right field. The rally came after UAB took its first lead, 3-2, in the top of the seventh inning, but left the bases loaded.
Coyote first baseman Yvon Minogue was 3-for-4 with three doubles against the Blazers (3-4). She doubled and scored in the fifth inning to make it 2-0 South Dakota and doubled and scored the tying run in the seventh. Minogue is 9 of 13 (.692) with four doubles and two RBIs in four games in Texas.
South Dakota trailed Corpus Christi 4-0 after three innings in game two. The Coyotes scored three runs in the fifth inning and two more in the sixth to take a 5-4 lead. Katie Dinning had an RBI single in both innings for the Coyotes. Minogue doubled and scored the first run in the fifth and tied the game at 4-4 with a base hit to center in the sixth.
The Islanders (0-8-1) scored an unearned run in the bottom of the sixth inning to tie the game at 5-5. Corpus Christi loaded the bases with two outs in the bottom of the seventh, but Coyote reliever Rachel Cue got Hayley Galloway to fly out to center field. The game was called after seven innings due to darkness.
The Coyotes are 1-3 after two days in Texas. Minogue has hit safely in all eight games to start the season and is batting .615 (16 for 26) with a homer and eight doubles. Jones has a six-game hitting streak and is batting .385 (10 for 26) thru eight games.
