NASHVILLE, Tenn.—Kansas City hit four consecutive home runs during a nine-run fourth inning en route to an 18-10 win against South Dakota Sunday on the final day of the Music City Classic hosted by Lipscomb and Belmont. Kansas City moved to 2-2 while the Coyotes dropped to 1-3.
South Dakota scored three runs in three of the first four innings and led 9-5 entering the bottom of the fourth. Emily Bevan, Katie Kelley, Cinda Ramos and Marlee Maples each hit solo homers to begin the fourth to tie the game at 9-9. Bevan and Ramos added RBI singles later in the inning. Kansas City scored nine runs on seven hits in the frame to take a 14-9 lead.
Matley Jones' RBI double closed the lead to 14-10 in the fifth inning. Kansas City scored two runs off an error in the bottom half of the fifth to lead 16-10. A two-run triple by Kendra Leach in the bottom of the sixth inning was the game winner.
Bevan had two hits, walked three times and scored five runs for Kansas City, which drew 14 free passes in the game. Katie Kelley (1-1) pitched all six innings, allowed 10 runs – nine earned – on 12 hits and struck out four.
Yvon Minogue was 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles to lead South Dakota. Sydney Hancock hit a two-run homer in the first inning and Allie Daly hit a three-run shot in the fourth. It was the first collegiate home run for Hancock. Daly is one shy of 30 in her career.
Minogue batted .538 (7-for-13) during the Classic with a home run, four doubles and four runs scored. Katie Cochran, who had an RBI double Sunday, hit .455 (5-for-11) with a home run, a triple and two doubles.
The Coyotes return to the field Friday with a doubleheader against Wisconsin as part of a tournament hosted by Texas A&M-Corpus Christi in Texas.
