ORLANDO, Fla.--Morgan Hancock's solo home run against 20th-ranked UCF accounted for South Dakota's lone run in a pair of games played Tuesday at UCF Softball Complex. Mercer took game one 5-0 and UCF won game two 5-1.
Hancock had three of South Dakota's seven hits on the day. She singled in her first at bat against Mercer, homered in her first at bat against UCF and also singled against the Knights. Hancock has 20 collegiate home runs.
Kirsten Steven struck out six and pitched a three-hit shutout to lead Mercer (15-12). Shortstop Emma Andrew hit solo home runs in the third and fifth innings for the Bears. Mercer also got homers from Riley Carter and Natalie Shiver.
Mackenzie Audas struck out 14 Coyotes in the nightcap to improve to 10-0 on the season. Designated player Jessica Ujvari had two hits including a homer in the fourth inning that gave the Knights a 2-0 lead. UCF tacked on three insurance runs in the sixth.
Coyote first baseman Yvon Minogue had hit safely in all 14 games entering play Monday, but was hitless in three at bats against both teams. Minogue's hitting streak was the longest by a Coyote in two seasons.
South Dakota (4-11-1) will try to snap a six-game skid Wednesday in games against Fairfield (9 a.m.) and Saint Joseph's (1:30 p.m.) in Winter Haven, Fla.
