DELAND, Fla.--Stetson trailed early, but scored late to take a pair of wins from South Dakota Friday at Patricia Wilson Field. The Hatters won game one 4-2 and took the nightcap 7-3.
Stetson (16-5) scored in each of the final three innings to erase a 2-0 deficit in game one. Courtney Brandt delivered a game-tying double in the bottom of the fourth inning. Demi Meza drove in Jessie Tenbroeck with a sacrifice fly in the fifth that put Stetson ahead 3-2. The Hatters tacked on an unearned run in the sixth.
South Dakota (5-14-1) took a 2-0 lead in the top of the fourth inning without the aid of a hit. Sydney Hancock was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded for the first run. Emily Winckler drew a walk in the next at bat to make it 2-0. Yvon Minogue lined out to short to end the inning.
Brandt went the distance in the circle for Stetson in game one to improve to 7-2. She allowed five hits and struck out two.
It was Brandt again who did the damage in the nightcap. Starting as the designated player, Brandt hit a grand slam with two outs in the bottom of the sixth inning that broke a 3-3 tie. The Hatters drew three walks to set up the slam.
South Dakota took a 2-0 lead in the top of the third inning on a two-run homer by Katie Dinning, her second of the season. Matley Jones delivered an RBI double that scored Dinning in the fifth inning that tied the game at 3-3. Dinning, Jones and Katie Cochran had two hits apiece in game two.
The Coyotes return to the field Saturday with games against Niagara (9 a.m. CT) and Albany (1:30 p.m. CT) in Winter Haven, Fla.
