WINTER HAVEN, Fla.--South Dakota scored 16 runs on 24 hits to win a pair of ballgames on the final day of the team's Spring Break trip. The Coyotes beat Valparaiso 9-1 in five innings and Saint Peter's 7-2 and will return home with an overall mark of 8-15-1.
South Dakota third baseman Shelby Keil hit her first collegiate home run and drove in four runs Sunday. She ended game one with a bases-clearing double that completed a five-run fifth inning for the Coyotes. She hit a solo home run in the fifth inning against Saint Peter's to give USD a 7-2 lead.
Center fielder Katie Dinning was 6-for-6 Sunday with four singles and two doubles. She scored four runs and drove in another. Dinning was 13-for-35 (.405) in 10 games in Florida.
The Coyotes got quality starts in the circle from Rachel Cue, who pitched the first one, and Madison Frain, who pitched the night cap. Both allowed one earned run and four hits in their complete-game efforts. Cue struck out five in five innings against Valparaiso. Frain struck out three against Saint Peter's.
South Dakota led 4-1 after three innings against Valpo before getting five in the fifth. Yvon Minogue doubled and scored in the first and fifth innings. She has 15 doubles thru 24 games and is one of the nation's leaders in that category. She's five shy of the Coyotes' single-season record.
USD trailed 2-0 after two innings against the Peacocks, but scored four in the third and two in the fourth to take control. Dinning and Matley Jones scored in both innings. Morgan Hancock delivered RBI singles in both innings.
Jones had a hit in both games Sunday to extend her hitting streak to nine games. She batted .371 (13-for-35) during the Spring Break trip. Cochran led the team with a .481 average (13-for-27) in Florida. She had two doubles, four RBIs and scored five runs.
South Dakota returns to campus having won three of its last four. The Coyotes will take on Iowa State in a doubleheader Saturday in Ames, Iowa.
