WICHITA, Kan.--Nebraska beat South Dakota 8-3 in game one and Wichita State downed the Coyotes 14-5 in game two on the second day of play at a triangular at Wilkins Stadium. South Dakota (4-8-1) wraps up play Sunday with a noon game against Nebraska.
Nebraska (7-10) took advantage of a Coyote miscue to break a 1-1 tie in the bottom of the fifth inning en route to a 5-1 lead. The Huskers tacked on three more runs in the sixth. Two came on a two-out single by Marjani Knighten that made it 8-3.
The game was scoreless through three innings as Nebraska's Emily Lockman battled South Dakota starter Madison Frain. Steph Pasquale's RBI double in the bottom of the fourth broke the ice. Coyote first baseman Yvon Minogue countered in the top of the fifth with her second home run of the season that tied the game at 1-1.
South Dakota shortstop Shelby Keil closed Nebraska's lead to 5-3 with a two-run double in the sixth. It was the only hit allowed by Nebraska reliever Cassie McClure, who pitched two innings to earn her second save of the season.
Wichita State (12-9) designated player Brittany Fortner and pinch hitter Paige Mason each hit a grand slam during a 13-run fourth inning for the Shockers in game two. Wichita State entered the inning with a 1-0 lead, but had nine hits, drew four walks and took advantage of a Coyote error in the inning.
South Dakota scored four runs in the bottom of the fourth and got a solo home run from Katie Dinning in the fifth. Dinning scored twice during the game and had two of the Coyotes' five hits.
Minogue led off the fourth inning with a double, which extended her hitting streak to 13 games. Matley Jones was 0-for-2 and was hit by a pitch, but saw her hitting streak end at 10 games. Jones batted .485 with three home runs, four doubles and 12 RBIs during the streak.
