2015 Mt. SAC Relays Day 2 Results
WALNUT, Calif.--South Dakota freshman Jake David won his section of the pole vault and two school distance records were broken as the Coyote track and field teams competed on day two of the 57th annual Mt. SAC Relays.
David vaulted over 17 feet for the second time in his collegiate career on Friday. He cleared 17 feet, ¾ inches on his first attempt to solidify the win in the Open B section. Junior Peter Chapman took fourth in the same section at 16-6 ¾. In the women's pole vault, sophomore Emily Brigham and junior Hunter Wilkes both cleared 12-9 ½. Brigham finished fifth and Wilkes placed seventh in the Open B section based on attempts.
Senior Taylor Chapman and junior Katie Wetzstein both broke the school 1,500-meter run records.
Chapman jumped past Coyote alum Mike Gade in the all-time history books by running 3:47.64, a two second career best for Chapman. Gade has held the school record of 3:48.45 for the event since 1998. Junior Isaac Allen also ran a career best in the 1,500 meters when he crossed the line in 3:56.58.
Wetzstein bettered her own record from earlier this season by .08 seconds. Wetzstein clocked a time of 4:24.19 to finish in sixth overall at the relays. Sophomore Nicole Schmidt also put a stamp on the record books when she recorded a new career best of 4:32.13, which ranks third all-time in school history.
Distance junior Kelsey Barrett dropped more than half a minute off her career best in the 5,000 meters to finish fifth in the Open C section. Barrett ran 16:36.74, a time that would have been a school record prior to junior Amber Eichkorn's 16:18.95 performance at the Texas Relays earlier this season.
Senior Lukas Bernard placed seventh overall in the 400 hurdles with a time of 52.51 seconds.
In the throws, senior Cody Snyder finished eighth among professional and elite athletes in the discus invitational. Snyder tossed the disc 186-3. Sophomore Danielle Waldner took ninth in the shot put with a toss of 46-11 ½.
The 4x400 relay of senior Amber Watson, freshman Shanice Cannigan, freshman Brooke Ireland and junior Analisa Huschle tagged up to win their heat in 3:43.97. The quartet ran the fastest time by any Coyote mile relay since 2008.
Competing unattached while redshirting the outdoor season, Madison Mills placed ninth in the Open A section of the pole vault after clearing the bar at 13-3 ½.
2015 Bryan Clay Invitational Results
AZUSA, Calif.--Three members of the Coyote track and field team competed at the Bryan Clay Invitational in Azusa, Calif., Friday.
In the triple jump, sophomore Ashley Thompson placed 12th with a leap of 38 feet, 9 inches. Freshman Colette Christensen jumped 37-1.
Sophomore Dustin Valind threw the disc 146-6 to finish 25th in a field of 64 athletes.
South Dakota wraps up a busy weekend of competition tomorrow at the Mt. SAC Relays, Sioux City Relays and Long Beach Invitational.
