South Dakota to host high school track meets

HS Track Meets

VERMILLION, S.D.—South Dakota will host four annual high school track and field meets during the next two weeks in the DakotaDome. The meets include the Bob Prince Invitational, the Norm Herren meet and the Dan Lennon Invitational.
 
The meets start off with the Bob Prince Invitational at 4 p.m. March 22. The Norm Herren meet starts at 10 a.m. March 26. The prestigious Dan Lennon Invitational is split between Class A competition on Monday, March 28, and Class B competition on Tuesday, March 29. The Dan Lennon Invitational is scheduled to begin at 11:30 a.m. both days.

Joy, Knutson to receive Dan Lennon Award
 
South Dakota track and field will also present the 2016 Dan Lennon Award to Keith Joy and Rod Knutson at the Dan Lennon Invitational. As the recipients of the 27th annual award, Joy will be honored Monday at 3:30 p.m. and Knutson will be recognized Tuesday at 3:30 p.m.

Joy has volunteered at the University of South Dakota's track and field meets for more than 30 years as a finish line clerk. A native of Miller, S.D., Joy has run photo finish equipment at USD, worked numerous Vermillion High School track meets and helped with the finish line at the South Dakota State Track & Field meets.
 
Joy serves as the chairman for the Vermillion Food Pantry, an organization he has been involved with for more than 25 years. He has been involved with the Vermillion Lions Club, with responsibilities including coordinating ushers and ticket takers at USD events and working in the kitchen during the Lions' pancake days. He is involved in leadership at Trinity Lutheran Church, helping with youth ministry, preparing meals and board leadership.
 
Joy resides in Vermillion, S.D., with his wife, Candy. They have four daughters with five grandchildren.
Rod Knutson
Rod Knutson
Knutson served as the high school boy's track and field coach at Elk Point and Elk Point-Jefferson for 33 years with 28 years as the head cross country coach. Knutson, a 1971 graduate of Southern State College (USD-Springfield), was a four-year letterwinner for Don Baker. The current USD cross country course is named for Baker.
 
Knutson has won 14 conference and region championships in addition to 52 invitational meets at Elk Point. He was named the South Dakota Boys Track Coach of the Year in 1977 when Elk Point won the Class A State Track and Field Meet.
