GRAND FORKS, N.D.—North Dakota rallied from a 34-14 deficit in the second half to force overtime, and beat South Dakota 47-44 on a 1-yard quarterback sneak by Keaton Studsrud in double overtime Saturday at Alerus Center.
It was the first meeting between the former NCC rivals since 2011. South Dakota (1-2) fell to 0-13 in Grand Forks since 1985. North Dakota (1-2) won its 30
th consecutive home opener.
North Dakota climbed within seven at 34-27 on a 28-yard field goal by Reid Taubenheim with 5:03 left in regulation, and tied it on a 33-yard interception return by Deion Harris with 3:28 left. It was the second pick-six of the game for the Fighting Hawks, whose first score was a 33-yard interception return by Cole Reyes near the end of the first quarter.
Hawks' running back John Santiago scored on the first play of overtime on a sweep to the left side. He had 140 yards on 22 carries and also had a 7-yard touchdown reception early in the fourth quarter. South Dakota countered with a 25-yard touchdown strike from
Chris Streveler to
Shamar Jackson on its first play of overtime.
Miles Bergner's extra point made it 41-41.
Bergner's third field goal of the game, a 37-yarder, put the Coyotes back ahead at 44-41. Bergner also made good from 35 and 50 yards. He broke Kurt Seibel's USD-record for career field goals with his 50 yarder and is the all-time leader with 46.
Studsrud threw a 17-yard pass to Luke Stanley to reach the 8 in double overtime. Santiago carried to the 1 and Studsrud's second sneak from there was the winner. Studsrud was 12-of-25 for 177 yards and two touchdowns. He also ran for 48 yards.
Streveler threw four touchdown passes for the second consecutive game and has nine on the season. He completed 16 of 29 for 215 yards and ran 19 times for 90. He hooked up twice with tight end
Drew Potter for touchdowns. The first was a 30-yarder when Potter went untouched down the middle of the field to put USD ahead 14-13 with 4:52 left in the first half. It was the longest catch of Potter's career. He was back in the end zone less than two minutes later for a 1-yard catch that made it 20-14.
Potter's second score was setup by
Riley Donovan, who took a quick pass to the right and broke several tackles before rumbling to the 1. Donovan came right back on the next series with a 63-yard touchdown catch that made it 27-14 right before halftime. North Dakota jumped offsides giving USD a free play and Streveler went deep to Donovan who ripped the ball away from the defender and had no one left to beat to the end zone. Donovan caught four passes for 104 yards. It was his fourth 100-yard receiving effort and first since 2013.
The Coyotes marched 75 yards on 14 plays to start the third quarter and pushed the lead to 34-14 on a 4-yard run up the middle by
Trevor Bouma. Bouma carried five times for 24 yards on the drive. Backup quarterback
Austin Simmons ran for nine yards on 4
th-and-1 from the UND 40 to extend the drive. Streveler quickly returned and threw a 10-yard pass to Donovan to reach the 4 ahead of Bouma's score.
Bouma ran 25 times for a team-high 95 yards to become the latest Coyote to eclipse 2,000 career yards rushing. With 2,008 yards, he stands 165 shy of entering USD's top-10 list.
Despite the late turnover, the Coyotes had a chance to win the game late in the fourth quarter. Bouma ran three times for 22 yards and Streveler converted a 3
rd-and-2 with a 7-yard run to reach the Hawks' 46. Bouma gained a yard and lost a yard on the next two plays, and Donovan was tackled for a short gain on a third-down pass that forced a Bergner punt.
Defensively, the Coyotes were led by senior safety
Jacob Warner, who had nine tackles and ripped the ball away from Santiago early in the game that led Bergner's first field goal.
Danny Rambo intercepted Studsrud at the UND 30 to set up a Coyote touchdown late in the second quarter. It was Rambo's first collegiate pick.
Alex Coker and redshirt-freshman
Darin Greenfield each recorded sacks. It was the collegiate debut for Greenfield, who finished with two tackles-for-loss.
South Dakota does not compete next week. The Coyotes will open MVFC play Oct. 1 at Youngstown State in Ohio.
