Wich wins title at Gopher Invitational

WTEN: Gopher Invite

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. — Junior Hannah Wich won the singles Flight "F" at the Gopher Invitational which was held Thursday through Saturday at Baseline Tennis Center.

"Another great tournament for us," said head tennis coach Brett Barnett. "We knew we would have to play at a high level to be successful and we did just that all weekend. Great singles play from Hannah to win her draw and Maria had another good weekend placing third."

Wich won all of her matches in straight sets. She started the tournament with a 6-2, 6-1 win against Omaha's Rebecca Stafford. In the next round she beat Wisconsin-Milwaukee's Masha Labanova 7-5, 6-0 and advanced to the finals. She beat North Dakota's Alysse Nakasato 6-1, 6-3, to claim the "F" Flight.

Sophomore Maria Pandya finished third in singles Flight "E". She knocked off Wisconsin-Milwaukee's Nicole Clark 6-0, 6-3 in the first round. She went the distance in the second round and beat Iowa State's Karen Alvarez 7-6(5), 2-6, 12-10. In the semifinals, she lost to Marquette's Fleur Eggrink 6-3, 6-1. She finished in third place by a walkover against Iowa's Taylor Tamblyn.

"Our doubles play was really strong as we played aggressive and won three draws," said Barnett. "We will have a lot of confidence moving forward after multiple wins against Power-5 schools. We are proving how dangerous of a team we are and we are only to keep getting better as long as we continue to work hard."

For doubles, everyday there was a different bracket. Teams played two matches every day. For the Coyotes, three doubles teams went 2-0 on certain days. Sophomore Ellie Burns and freshman Nanette Nylund went 2-0 on Friday after beating Omaha's Kenzi Hill and Janelle Wilson 7-6(2) and then Iowa State's Lisa Bender and Erin Freeman.

Sophomore Anastasia Bondarenko and freshman Barbora Kollarova also went 2-0 on Friday. The duo beat Eastern Michigan's Anna Veleva and Alejandra Barcelo 6-0 and then Iowa's Anastasia Reimchen and Aimee Tarun 6-3.

Wich and Pandya teamed up for a 2-0 record on Saturday. They beat Wisconsin Milwaukee's Masedevall Masip and Clarke 6-3 and then beat Omaha's Hill and Rylee Tucker 6-4.

South Dakota continues its fall season in Omaha, Neb., Friday for the Creighton Invite.
