Going Streaking
Although a seven-game win streak was ended in Fargo on Wednesday, the Coyotes have still won a program record 21 consecutive home games. That streak ranks fourth among active win streaks in the nation. The Coyotes have lost just one home game in the last three seasons - and that came to Washington (Dec. 12, 2015) who advanced to the NCAA Final Four.
Aren't you glad she's a Yote?
In the midst of a breakout sophomore season, Coyote guard
Allison Arens has been instrumental in USD's early season success. She sits atop Summit League standings at 21.4 points per game, which ranks 11th nationally. Arens has 10 20-point games this season including three in the first three Summit games. She also ranks second in the Summit for assists (70) and seventh for rebounds (91). After guiding USD to a pair of home wins against Denver and South Dakota State, Arens grabbed a number of accolades including Summit League Player of the Week, espnW National Player of the Week, NCAA's Starting Five and College Sports Madness Summit Player of the Week.
One-Two Punch
Arens and sophomore guard
Jaycee Bradley have been a one-two punch kicking off league play, although each scoring in different fashions. Arens drives to the hoop to earn the foul, with 43 percent of her 26.7 points per game in league play coming from the charity stripe. Bradley has made more than half of her 12 points per game from downtown. On the season, Bradley's shooting 45.8 percent from outside the arc which ranks fifth on USD's single-season charts. Her 49 made 3-pointers ranks ninth nationally.
The Big Sister
While
Allison Arens has led the Coyotes in scoring, on the boards and making plays, her older sister
Bridget Arens remains a spark for the Coyotes when needed. She's been known as a defensive anchor, but she has stepped up offensively through three league games in averaging 8.7 points. Arens banked in a 16-foot jumper to give the Coyotes' the final lead against SDSU, then a game later was the only Coyote to score in the first five minutes of the game.
Last Season against the Jaguars
Although the Coyotes earned the sweep over the Jaguars last season, it didn't come easily. When the women faced IUPUI in Vermillion, it was the first game of a doubleheader that featured a men's rivalry between USD and SDSU in the second portion. The crowd - and a clutch fourth quarter performance by
Nicole Seekamp - pulled the 65-59 win out for the Coyotes inside the DakotaDome.
The Summit
It's still early in Summit League play and four teams are tied for second in the Summit's standings with one loss. Oral Roberts remains unbeaten, albeit with only two games played. South Dakota, Western Illinois, South Dakota State and North Dakota State are tied for second at 2-1.
