AMES, Iowa —The South Dakota swimming and diving team fell short at the Iowa State Tri-Duals Friday in Ames, Iowa, at Beyer Pool. The Coyote women lost to both Iowa State (227-71) and Texas Christian (218-81) while the men fell to Texas Christian (235-75).
The South Dakota women captured two individual event victories.
Sabrina Sabadeanu won the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 2 minutes, 4.89 seconds. On the diving board,
Sarah Schank's score of 275.45 on the three-meter dive earned her first place.
On the one-meter dive, Schank finished third (231.10) with
Haley Pederson .05 away from Schank to take fourth (231.05).
Alongside Sabadeanu's first-place finish, she also earned third place in the 100-yard backstroke (57.80), fourth place in the 200-yard individual medley (2:09.74) and swam the first leg of the 200-yard medley relay that captured fourth place with a time of 1:48.33. Other members of the relay include
Kassidie Cornell,
Theresa Godlewski and
Kathleen Juffer.
Other notable finishes for the Coyote women include
Hannah Lange's fifth-place finish in the 1,000-yard freestyle (10:59.83) and Cornell's performances in the breaststroke races. Cornell placed sixth in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:08.21 and seventh place in the 200-yard breaststroke with her time of 2:30.41.
Hannah Gupton finished seventh in the 100-yard butterfly with the time of 1:00.62.
Morgan Holt took eighth in the 200-yard butterfly with her finishing time of 2:11.56.
The South Dakota men made their presence known finishing in the top three in a number of events.
In the 50-yard freestyle
Eric Erlenmeyer claimed first place with his time of 21.61.
Hunter Padgett wasn't far behind to take third with a time of 21.80.
In four events, the Coyotes placed second.
Ben Kopp captured his second-place finish in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 53.00. Kopp also swam the first leg of the 200-yard medley relay that took second with the time of 1:35.72.
Elbert Chuang,
Jared Thorson and Erlenmeyer were also a part of the relay.
In the 100-yard freestyle, Padgett claimed second with his 47.93 finishing time. Padgett earned himself two more third-place finishes. One third-place finish was in the 200-yard freestyle (1:44.07), his second came from the 400-yard freestyle relay that finished with the time of 3:12.01. Padgett was joined by Erlenmeyer, Chuang and
Wyatt Thompson in the relay.
Other respectable third-place finishes for the Coyote men include Chuang's finish in the 100-yard breaststroke (58.17) and the 200-yard breaststroke (2:08.34). Thorson's 52.64 finish in the 100-yard butterfly also placed him third in the event.
In the 200-yard individual medley,
Christian Fossum finished with the time of 2:02.80 to take third place with
Tanner Espersen right behind him (2:03.17) to take fourth.
Kopp and Nicholas Gehling also went back-to-back in the 200-yard backstroke. Kopp finished in third with the time of 1:56.05 as Gehling came in at fourth with a 1:58.32.
On the diving board,
Isaac Morris finished second in the three-meter dive with a score of 310.50. On the one-meter dive, Morris placed third (261.35) with
Brady Saunders capturing fourth (256.40).
The Coyotes will be back in the pool Dec. 1-3 as they compete in the Rochester Invite in Rochester, Minnesota.
