Coyotes capture nine at Wildcat Classic

WAYNE, Neb.–South Dakota's track and field team captured nine events at the Wildcat Outdoor Classic at LeRoy Simpson Track on Saturday.
 
Junior Jacob Barents captured the shot put with the fourth-best throw in school history. Barents launched the shot put 56 feet, 1 inch, to earn the victory.
 
South Dakota took the top four spots of the men's discus. Sophomore Ben Hammer earned the event title with a throw 170-6, the fifth-best discus throw in school history. Junior Ethan Fenchel finished runner-up in 170-5.  Barents moved to sixth in program history with a throw of 169-4. Senior Dustin Valind took fourth.
 
Redshirt-junior Nicole Schmidt was victorious in the 800 meters with a clocking of 2:14.17. Junior Rachael Zeiger finished runner-up in the 800.
 
Junior Brooke Ireland won the 400 meters in 58.01 seconds. She also finished third in the 200 meters with a time of 26.05. Freshman Ellie Wilson finished runner-up to Ireland in the 400 meters.
 
Freshman Zack Anderson captured a title in the high jump with a clearance of 6-6.
 
Sophomore Haley Bruggeman captured the 400-meter hurdles in 1:04.71. Freshman Carmen Bermudez trailed her in third with a time of 1:09.16. Bruggeman also took fourth in the 100-meter hurdles.
 
Junior Maddie Aune tied her personal best of 12-5 ½ in the pole vault as she finished runner-up.
 
The Coyotes swept the men's and women's 3,000-meter steeplechase. Sophomore Pierce Libbey and junior Brook Benes were victorious in their first-ever steeplechase in 10:04.22 and 12:08.68, respectively. Freshman Haley Fritza and senior Lottie Grimshaw finished behind Benes in second and third. Junior Brice Cowman and sophomore Hunter Paulsen completed the sweep on the men's side. Cowman crossed the finish line just a second behind Libbey.
 
Freshman Ellie Coyle earned her first event title at Wayne State, winning the 5,000 meters in 19:12.95. Classmate Kimberley Klein finished runner-up.
 
Junior Tomas Kamenik finished runner-up in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 58.04 seconds.
 
Freshman Ivy Haines took third in the triple jump.
 
Freshman Mason Wichers crossed the finish line in third for the 400 meters.
 
South Dakota wraps up the Wayne State Classic at noon Sunday with the javelin and hammer throw.
