2017 Beach Invitational Results
LONG BEACH, Calif.–South Dakota senior

Chris Nilsen set South Dakota program records to wrap up the Beach Invitational on Saturday at Jack Rose Track.
Nilsen tied his NCAA-leading height of 18 feet, 8 ¼ inches, to capture the Beach Invitational pole vault title on Saturday. Nilsen has jumped the height four times during his freshman campaign, including the winning mark of the 2017 NCAA Indoor Championships. He first cleared the height outdoors on Thursday at the Pacific Coast Intercollegiate, also hosted by Long Beach State at Jack Rose Track.
Waldner threw a quarter-inch past her own school record in the shot put with a toss of 53-1 ¾. Waldner placed third overall and was the second collegiate finisher in the shot put. She remains ranked 27th in the nation, 14th in the NCAA West Region and at the top of the Summit League.
Senior
Tyler Frank tied for fourth in the high jump after clearing a season-best 6-10 ¾. The height ties him with Coyote freshman
Zack Anderson at the top of the Summit League standings. Anderson placed 12th on Saturday with a mark of 6-8 ¾.
The Coyotes had a pair of top-10 finishes in the men's and women's 400-meter hurdles. Junior
Shanice Cannigan took sixth with a clocking of 1:01.03. Senior
Jay Cooper crossed the finish line in 53.15 seconds for ninth.
Senior
Emily Grove took seventh overall in the pole vault with a final height of 13-9 ¼. Grove was the fourth collegiate finisher. Senior
Emily Brigham cleared 13-3 ½ to tie for 10th overall.
Sophomore
Brennan Schmidt crossed the finish line in eighth in the open 400 meters. Schmidt clocked a time of 48.22 seconds.
With junior
Ethan Fenchel's seventh-place finish in yesterday's hammer throw competition, the Coyotes tallied nine top-10 performances at the Beach Invitational. Fenchel was just an inch shy of his personal best in the discus on Saturday, winning his flight in 173-6.
The Coyotes return to the Midwest to compete at the Sioux City Relays next Friday and Saturday.
