Huglen, Waldner school records highlight day two of Sioux City Relays

SIOUX CITY, Iowa–South Dakota sophomore Madeline Huglen and senior Danielle Waldner broke school records in their respective events to highlight a pair of 20 Coyote victories at the Sioux City Relays held at Olsen Stadium.
 
In her first steeplechase of the season, Huglen dropped nearly a minute off her personal best time to set a new South Dakota school record of 10:42.42. Huglen breaks a seven-year-old school record of 10:48.28 held by Ramsey (Kavan) Fitzsimmons. The time moves Huglen to third in the Summit League.
 
The defending Summit League champion, Waldner broke her own South Dakota shot put record for the second consecutive week by throwing 53-5 ½. The toss is also an inch further than her indoor school record from this winter. The mark moves her one spot on NCAA charts to 28th. Senior Meghan Dennis placed third in 45-10.
 
Junior Lindsay Joyce and senior Amber Eichkorn both crossed the finish line under the Sioux City Relays meet record in the 1,500 meters on Saturday. Joyce edged Eichkorn down the straight away in 4:32.80 while Eichkorn clocked 4:33.52. USD's Katie Wetzstein held the previous record of 4:33.71.
 
The Coyotes swept the top-four places in the men's discus led by a pair of personal bests from junior Jacob Barents and sophomore Ben Hammer. Barents won the event in 174-6 and Hammer was just three inches back in 174-3. Junior Ethan Fenchel and senior Dustin Valind rounded out the group in third and fourth, respectively.
 
The women's 4x200-meter relay with legs from sophomore Kari Dufoe, senior Ravan Kott, freshman Tasheka Gordon and junior Brooke Ireland, captured the meet title in 1:39.90. The Coyotes' were two tenths of a second off the meet record from USD's 1994 relay team. The time is the fifth fastest in school history.
 
Dufoe, Kott and Gordon teamed with freshman Samara Spencer for another victory in the 4x100 relay with a time of 47.60 seconds.
 
Sophomore Jacob Simmons clocked a time of 3:53.00 to win the 1,500 meters. Classmate Eldon Warner placed third in the event.
 
The Summit League leader in the long jump this season, freshman Ethan Toy won the Sioux City Relays with a leap of 23-9. His top mark this spring is 24-4 ½.
 
The Coyotes captured both the men's and women's sprint medley relays in 3:30.53 and 4:09.49, respectively. The men's relay consisted of sophomore Hunter Leighton and freshman Dennis Parsley on the 200-meter carries, freshman Mason Wichers on the 400-meter leg and Warner for the 800-meter stretch. On the women's side, senior Courtney Albrecht and Kott ran for 200 meters, senior Nicole Schmidt took the 400-meter stretch and Joyce anchored the 800-meter portion.
 
The men's 4x200 relay of freshman Sam Clark, junior Tomas Kamenik, Wichers and sophomore Mario Magana placed second in 1:28.99.
 
The women's 4x400 relay also finished runner-up with a clocking of 3:54.98. Freshman Hannah Draayer, sophomore Mallory Fine, freshman Ellie Wilson and Ireland each took a leg.
 
Dufoe finished runner-up in the open 100 meters in 12.08 seconds. Spencer finished behind her in third.
 
Sophomore Hunter Paulsen clocked a personal best of 9:43.52 in the 3,000-meter steeplechase for third.
 
Sophomore Haley Bruggeman added a third-place finish in the 100-meter hurdles with a 14.92 clocking.
 
Coyote alum Brant Haase returned to the Sioux City Relays and captured the 5,000 meters in 14:48.15. Junior Brice Cowman placed third in 15:19.65.
 
The Coyotes host the USD Twilight at Lillibridge Track Complex on Tuesday. Field events kick off at 3 p.m. and running events start at 5 p.m.
