WATERTOWN, Wis. — Just a few days after capturing the Wisconsin State Amateur Championship, South Dakota sophomore
Matt Tolan won a qualifying sectional Monday to punch his ticket to the U.S. Amateur Championship Aug. 14-20.
Â
Tolan finished the opening round in a tie for first after carding a 3-under 67 at the Watertown Country Club in Watertown, Wisconsin. He then dominated the second, and final, round with a 5-under 65 to win by four strokes over Kyle Slattery, a junior at Southern Illinois – Edwardsville. Over the 36 holes on Monday, Tolan carded 12 birdies including seven in the day's second round.
Â
Of the 68-player field, Tolan and Slattery are the only qualifiers along with two alternates for the U.S. Amateur field.
Â
The Eau Claire, Wisconsin, native now travels to Los Angeles, California, for the U.S. Amateur Championship at the Riviera Country Club and the Bel-Air Country Club. The Riviera Country Club has twice hosted the PGA Championship while hosting the U.S. Open and NCAA Men's Division I Championship once each.
Â
South Dakota will now have representation at the U.S. Amateur for the second-straight year as
Tommy Vining competed at the 2016 championship.
Â
As a freshman with the Coyotes, Tolan won his first collegiate event when he carded a 3-under 213 at the UNO Invitational September 3-4. He shot a 5-under 67 in the tournament's second round, tying for the fourth lowest round for an individual in school history.
