Results

LONDON, England–South Dakota freshman Chris Nilsen placed 13th in the men's pole vault qualification, narrowly missing Tuesday's 12-man final, at the 2017 IAAF World Track and Field Championships on Sunday at London Stadium in Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park.

Nilsen cleared 18 feet, 4 ½ inches, on his second attempt to finish 13th. He was one of 17 athletes to make the bar while eight athletes went on to clear 18-8 ¼ in the competition. The remaining four spots in the final were filled by competitors who made 18-4 ½ on their first attempt. Sam Kendricks was the only American to advance through to the final after jumping 18-8 ¼.

The 2017 NCAA Indoor Champion in the pole vault, Nilsen caps off his freshman campaign with a pair of All-America finishes at NCAA Championships, two Summit League Field Athlete of the Year awards and a pair of South Dakota program records. Nilsen vaulted a personal best 18-10 ¼ to finish third at the U.S. Outdoor Championships in June.

Sunday's finish at the IAAF World Championships wraps up the 2017 South Dakota track and field season.
