OMAHA, Neb. — The South Dakota women's swimming and diving team saw victories in five events and placed in the top three in eight others Friday at HPER Pool in Omaha, Nebraska. The Coyotes came up short against the Mavericks 171-124.
Sabrina Sabadeanu and
Kathleen Juffers went 1, 2 in the 100-yard backstroke and the 200-yard backstroke. Sabadeanu won the 100 with a time of 59.63 seconds with Juffers right behind with a time of 1 minute, 3 seconds. Sabadeanu took the 200 as well with a time of 2:09.65 as Juffers finished with a time of 2:10.39.
The Coyotes took the top three spots in the 400-yard individual medley.
Abby Hollub finished in first with a time of 4:45.26.
Anna VerKuilen took second with a finish of 4:49.75 and
Julianne Seppala placed third with a time of 5:03.36.
Kassidie Cornell won the 100-yard breaststroke with a finishing time of 1:08.23 and placed second in the 200-yard breaststroke coming in at 2:26.83.
The 400-yard freestyle relay team took first place with a final time of 3:45.58. Relay members consisted of VerKuilen,
Emily Lundstrom,
Katie Coleman and
Cora Ruzicka.
Other notable finishes in Omaha include the 200-yard medley relay team of
Theresa Godlewski, Cornell,
Hannah Gupton and Juffers which took third with a time of 1:49.39.
Individually, Godlewski captured three second-place finishes. In the 50-yard freestyle she swam a 25.02, in the 100-yard freestyle she earned second place with a finish of 54.23 and in the 100-yard butterfly came in at 1:00.10. Gupton came in right on Godlewski's tail in the 100-yard butterfly to take third with a finish of 1:00.13.
Additional second-place finishes for USD include
Taylor Kidd's 200-yard freestyle race that she finished in the time of 1:58.85. In the 1,000-yard freestyle,
Jordan Thielbar took second with a time of 10:50.15.
Hannah Lange finished right behind Thielbar to capture third with a time of 10:52.14.
On the diving board,
Sarah Schank placed second in the three-meter dive with a score of 269.78 with
Haley Pederson finishing in fifth with a final score of 229.20. On the one-meter dive Schank took fourth with a finish of 244.04 and Pederson finished fifth with a 214.12 score.
The Coyotes are back in action Saturday, Jan. 20, as they travel to Brookings, South Dakota, to take on the Jackrabbits. The first event starts at 5 p.m. in the Marshall Center Pool.
