OMAHA, Neb.—South Dakota women's cross country extended its streak of league titles to five and senior
Eldon Warner captured the individual men's title at the Summit League Championships on Saturday at the Miracle Hill Golf Course.
Warner becomes the first Coyote, men or women, to capture an individual Summit League cross country title. He completed the 8,000-meter course in 24 minutes, 58.59 seconds. Warner was also named the Summit League Championship MVP on the men's side. The Council Bluffs, Iowa native used his foot-speed (Warner is a two-time Summit 800-meter champion) to outkick the field and cap of his collegiate career with a cross country title.
The women's race came down to a single point as South Dakota edged out North Dakota State 51-52. Four Coyotes earned all-Summit League honors, but South Dakota's depth proved to be the difference-maker as USD placed eight runners in front of NDSU's fifth. South Dakota State took third with 61 points.
Seniors
Megan Billington and
Madeline Huglen paced the Coyotes while earning all-Summit League first-team honors. Billington placed fourth for the second-straight year with a personal best 6,000-meter time of 21:08.45. She finished her career as a four-time all-Summit League honoree with four team championships. Huglen earned first team honors for the second-straight year, finishing seventh in 21:29.7.
Finishing on the all-league second team were sophomore
Jonna Bart and junior
Kianna Stewart. Bart earned her first career honors and placed 10th with a time of 21:49.19. She broke the 22-minute barrier for just the second time of her career. Stewart finished 14th to earn all-Summit honors for the second-straight year. She crossed the finish line in 22:00.80.
Rounding out the Coyote scorers was sophomore
Kelsi Kearney. She placed 16th with a clocking of 22:06.06.
South Dakota's pushers on Saturday were sophomore
Laura Nelson and senior
Bethany Kozak, crossing the finish line in 20th and 21st, respectively. Nelson clocked 22:24.21 with Kozak just behind in 22:28.25. Kozak also raced on her fourth Summit League Championship team.
Sophomore
Morgan Lawler and redshirt-freshman
Macy Heinz also raced for the Coyotes on Saturday, but did not count in the team scoring. Lawler took 23rd with a time of 22:32.23. She was four seconds off her career best mark from two weeks ago. Heinz finished 28th in 22:46.30.
The Coyote women posted a 57-second spread between its first and fifth runner.
South Dakota's streak of five-straight Summit League titles ranks sixth amongst active streaks nationally. It also marks the second-longest streak in Summit League history behind Southern Utah (1998-04).
The Coyote men took third in the team race behind Warner's individual title. South Dakota State ran away with the men's team title with 23 points. North Dakota State finished runner-up with 60 points and South Dakota was third with 83 points.
Warner traded places with SDSU's Chase Cayo and Kyle Burdick from a year ago. Taking advantage of an easy pace early in the race, the senior was able to outkick the Jackrabbit duo. He was six seconds off his cross country personal best of 24:52.
Freshman
Merga Gemeda earned a spot on the all-Summit League second team by placing 10th in 25:53.54. Gemeda finished one second off his season-best time from two weeks ago at the Bradley Classic.
Sophomore
Kallo Arno placed 24th with a time of 26:50.00 and senior
Nate Wendt took 27th in 27:01.24.
Rounding out the Coyote scorers was sophomore
