PREVIEW: South Dakota Cross Country ready for conference meet

10.30.2025

ASHLAND, Neb. – The Yotes are back on a familiar course Saturday, as South Dakota heads south to Ashland, Nebraska to run in the Summit League Cross Country Championships.

The Summit League Cross Country Championships are scheduled to be ran at the Cross Country Course at Mahoney State Park in Ashland, the same place the Platte River Rumble, USD's first event of the season, takes place.

THE COYOTES
South Dakota's last race was the Bradley Pink Classic in Peoria, Illinois a couple weeks ago. Isaac Ochoa placed 12th to lead the USD men and Geneva Timmerman took 28th to pace the Yote women.

Last time the Coyotes ran at the Maloney State Park at the Platte River Rumble-Gold race, USD's women (running a 5k instead if Saturday's scheduled 6k) had three in the top 15, led by Timmerman's 17:42.7 in seventh place. Calia Chaney (12th) finished in 17:54.23 and Taylor Byerley (15th) crossed in 18:06.78. The Coyote men (running a 6k instead of the 8k distance that will be ran Saturday) also had three in the top 15 with Isaac Ochoa (5th) finishing in 18:02.44, followed by Natnael Kifle (12th) 18:14.74 and Piercze Marshall (15th) in 18:22.38.

RACE INFORMATION
The Summit League Championships are scheduled for 10 a.m. (men's 8k) and 11 a.m. (women's 6k) Saturday morning. This will be the first time the conference meet is being held at this location. Live timing is provided by Black Squirrel Timing. The races will be live streamed on the Summit League Network powered by Midco Sports Plus. Tickets to the event must be purchased in advance, with more info on the Summit League Championships website.

LAST CONFERENCE MEET
At last fall's Summit League meet, USD's men placed third and the women fourth on the home course at The Bluffs Golf Course in Vermillion. It was the second time the conference meet has been held at The Bluffs.

USD had three all-conference runners a season ago, as both Natnael Kifle and Isaac Ochoa were all-Summit League on the men's side and Madison Brouwer were all-Summit League on the women's side.

ONE LAST THING
Two points are up for grabs in the Interstate Series presented by First Interstate Bank Saturday. The team between South Dakota and South Dakota State that finishes higher in the team standings for both the men's and women's races will each earn a point towards the Interstate Series standings. Fans can view the standings and get more info about the Interstate Series here.
